The 2 choices of memory foam are 55kg/m3 and 67kg/m3. Both of these are high density, but one is just higher than the other (low density memory foam simly doesn't give you the support that memory foam is supposed to).
The Eros isn't super soft. With the softer foam option it gives a medium feel, and with the firm foam it is slightly firmer.
My best advice is to phone the seller and ask advice.
We are still a while off being in a position to order, but I will call nearer the time. In the meantime though, I've bought a couple of memory foam pillows today as they were in bhs half price sale, £50 down to £25 made by Slumberdown, see here. Not sure if they're a good buy, no mention of the density factor on the pack, but they feel pretty comfortable... but the smell is atrocious! It's enough to make me reconsider getting a memory foam mattress as both of us are quite sensitive to smells... I've read that it's meant to dissipate after a few days, but not sure if it will be enough for our noses! Tim, can you offer any reassurance? I'm liking the sound of the Calypso mattress by Apollo, but doubt I would be able to abide the pong if it lingered. A bit of an expensive risk to take I'm thinking....
[Just noticed that the prices have gone up on ebay- that will teach me to procrastinate!]

The smell is caused by the fire retardant chemicals used in the foam. Sometimes the foam is used before the chemicals are 100% dry, and this is what causes the smell. The smell will go eventually in a well aired room. This problem is mainly associated with foam only mattresses, as mattresses with a combination of springs and foam allow air to circulate better. Obviously the Calypso has a combination of springs and memory foam.
I have only once had a customer memtion any smell, and it was from a Midas (latex foam/memory foam) mattress. I personally didn't notice any strong smell from my Calypso.

Hubby wasn't sure about the pillows when he saw they were contoured, so I'm going to take them back, what with the smell as well. Have seen these traditional type MF pillows on ebay - anyone tried them or got any advice?

Bedlum beds pillows work out as £60 a pair though, compared with £25 for these ebay ones - seem much the same type of thing, same seller also sometimes sells perflex for £30 a pair - so easier on my pocket and yep, mega strapped for cash as doing up our bedroom and ensuite, need new bedding too as going up a size! So new curtains needed too to match the bedding! Very expensive business updating a bedroom!!
Thanks for your comment re the smell thing, I've contacted a few people who bought calypso from both bedlum and matts uk to see what other people said about the smell. Only heard back from one so far, who says that it did smell quite strongly to start with and now quite a few weeks later, he is still aware of the smell, but it is fading with time.....
So still not sure what to do. Hubby moans about even the slightest strange smell, flipping whinger! :rotfl:0 -
my husband moans at the littlest thing to,especially me.ask on the forum & see if any1 else has bought the pillows off ebay or the bedlumbeds or matt man ones & get every one to tell ya what theyr like, but the ones i got from bedlums are really comfy, they do work round the contours of ya head n neck & for £5 more than the ebay ones its worth it if theyr good!0

The same seller has now listed some perflex pillows (they seem to be exactly the same as bedlum beds pillows) for £26 delivered for the pair, which seems to be a brilliant price. I usually have 2 pillows, but admittedly they are rubbish quality and veeerrrry flat. Not sure whether to get 1 pillow each or 2. Ella, or anyone with MF pillows, how many do you have? I'm guessing one MF pillow is probably sufficient as probably 2 would take your head and neck out of line with the rest of the body.
I've also heard back from a couple of ebay buyers of the Calypso mattress and they both absolutely rave about them. Both said that the smell faded very quickly, so that's boosted my confidence and the MF mattress project is back on again!0 -

All products have their own individual smell. The smell from the fire retardant chemicals shouldn't still be present by the time you receive the mattress. However if the factory have used a brand new batch of foam straight from the manufacturers, and have used some from the middle of the bale, and you have received the mattress within 24 hours of manufacture (a few days if it is latex/memory foam), then there is a chance that you will still smell the chemicals.
If your hubby really hates any synthetic smell, then there is no point in purchasing any product made from synthetic material. In this case you would be better off going for pocket sprung only.
As for the pillows, Bedlum Beds don't purchase them direct from the manufacturer (as they do with the divans and mattresses), so for this reason they can't sell them as cheap. However they do deliver them free of charge when delivered with a bed or mattress.0 -

There is no point in spending loads of money on buying 2 MF pillows each. You are better off with a feather pillow under the memory foam pillow.0
