    1. Makes no difference. If it was sprung then you would feel a difference over platform top. So it is just yet another sales gimmick.
    2. 800 springs is enough, although personally I'd go for a minimum of 1000. It's more down to how firm you want it.
    3. Yet another gimmick. I've seen a few of these lately infused with all sorts of oils. Personally apart from the fire retardants, I'd rather have as few chemicals as possible in my mattress.
Dreams have a habbit of giving as little information as possible so that with the very few details they do give it appears that the mattress is similar to a higher spec mattress.

Do you have a link to the mattress?

Appreciate your time Tim, and your response has helped greatly.
Unfortuantely no link to the mattress - we were going to buy a bedstead for the Dreams Ebay shop where they sell blue cross items, but they removed them all yesterday!?!
We have since been around the local area visiting independant retailers, where the approach and advice by the salesmen greatly differed from the big chains. We have placed our deposit with one of these independant retailers for a divan which we have tried, and has a free return and swop policy.

I would recommend anyone looking to purchase a new mattress / bed to go for a drive around local independant retailers, we found prices slightly cheaper and the service more personal.
  • Hi
i have a severe neck problem and my current firm mattress is hell. Can't afford to get this wrong this time and have tried a Kaymed 2000 pillow top which was lovely, Healthbeds memory flex which i think was good and Ergoflex which i haven't tried but read good reviews. Any comments?
    Cheers

  • Hi Tim,

Been reading the forum and have looked around on the internet and in high street shops to find the best options available. We are looking for a pocke tpsrung memory foam mattress in super king size. Do you think that the mattress on the link below is a god deal for the money they are charging? Also, do you think this mattress is suitable for a super king sized bed with a slatted base, slats are 3.5 inches apart. There is a support beam in the middle, so the slats are actually 3ft in length each (6ft total width of the bed)

    http://www.snugmattress.co.uk/acatalog/info_201.html

Also, has anyone heard anything about this company. They are offering a 60-day free trial with only a GBP40 charge to take it back if you dont like it and they will even supply the packing material for you to pack it when they come to take it back! I think that is the best return policy I have found among UK retailers: internet or high street. Does anyone know of any better?

The other option is to buy a brand name Sealy Enchantment mattress which seems to be cheapest over here - do you think this is reliable? They have a 30-night trial period with GBP40 return costs as well.

    http://www.mattressland.co.uk/productdetail.asp?val=products&typeid=118&pro_type=&id=715&cattype=1&itemID=72755

Do you think the two are comparable and if so which one is a better specification (the specs for the enchantment mattress are below)

    - 60mm of memory foam, 60kg/m3
    - 792 sprngs in super king size
    - coolmax cover (does this really help in any way?)
    - total mattress height is 33cm (it is huge!)

    many thanks in advance!

I can only give general advice rather than comment on specific products. However there are a few points that I should make you aware of:
    1. If you shop around you can find better return policies (that you don't have to pay for).
    2. The number of springs is normally quoted for a king size mattress. So because the Snug mattress has 1000 pocket springs in a king size mattress, then they shouldn't really be calling the super king size a 1200 pocket sprung mattress even though it does contain that many, if you understand what I mean.
    3. Don't be confused between normal pocket springs and those that are encapsulated in reflex foam. The latter type are much smaller, and much cheaper to produce, and won't give you the same support as normal pocket springs. They are actually there more for the manufacturers to jump onto the band wagon as more people realise that pocket sprung/memory foam is the best option for support. With normal pocket springs the air can flow freely through the spring layer. However with the reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs the foam surrounding the springs will prevent air circulating as well, and removing the excess heat from the mattress.
    4. Coolmax only provides very limited use on a mattress by taking away moisture from your body. However there is a limit to how much it can take away, because that moisture has to go somewhere. So it is yet another gimmick.
    5. The memory foam should ideally have a density of between 60 and 70kg per m3. Less than this and it won't give the support that you are paying extra for the memory foam to provide. More than this and the recovery rate of the memory foam will be too slow, so you will have trouble changing position in bed.
    6. The optimum depth of the memory foam should be between 2" and 2.5" (if you don't like to be warm in bed, then I'd go for 2"). If the memory foam is less than 2" then it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the memory foam is too deep, then you will just sink deeper into the memory foam and will be engulfed in it. This can prevent your body's natural cooling system working properly, and cause you to overheat. Also if you sink too deep into the memory foam then you may also have difficulty changing position. Remember the memory foam is only there to mould to your body, and for no other reason. So once it has moulded to your body you won't gain any extra benefit by sinking deeper into it.
    7. Sealy are part of the same company as Silentnight, and the posture tech spring system is basically the same as miracoil. Do a forum search and find out other peoples views.
    8. If you have been reading the threads you will know my views on non turn mattresses.
  • Hi Tim,

Thanks a ton for the reply below. I have looked aorund for a two-sided pocket sprung plus memory foam mattress and I cant seem to find any examples of these. DO you know of any companies/products with these features? - all the pocket sprung mem foam mattresses that I have seen are "no-turn" only!

Also, any comments on the suitability of the mattress for a slatted base like I described below?

I have found only a couple of internet retailers who would do full money back returns policies - looking for more now!

All I can say is google it.

As for the slatted base. If you can add extra slats then that would be the easiest method for closing the gaps up. If you can't add extra slats, then lay a sheet of peg board over the slats to spread the weight out.

Most pocket sprung mattresses can only cope with gaps of up to 1", although due to the memory foam spreading the weight out, 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses can be used with gaps of up to 3".

I am looking to buy a memory foam/pocket sprung mattress.

The one I am most leaning towards atm is the Memflex 1000 from Bedworld, or the 2000 from Memory Foam Warehouse

I bought a memory foam mattress a few years ago from a seller on Ebay, after 6 months all the foam started disintegrating. Tried to contact seller, he had disappeared. So, for that reason, I am reluctant to buy off Ebay again.

Why do manufacturers make such a necessary and important purchase so bewilderingly difficult??
We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment

Because they are trying to take advantage of the publics lack of knowledge about mattresses, and baffle you with gimmicks.
  • Hi,
This is a touch after the horse as bolted, but tbh I only found this thread after we'd bought a new mattress.

Anyway - we went to JL last week and tried a few beds out - I have to say I can't really get comfortable on a bed when I'm in a shop and people are wondering past, but we both liked the Natural Pocket 3 and so got it - http://www.johnlewis.com/230471532/Product.aspx.

Although it says on the web site these are fine on slates, i've read on the forum this is not the case - can anyone confirm for me as we're putting it on a slatted bed.

    Thanks
