I've now found another site which says that it has only 2.5cm (1") of memory foam, although it still doesn't say the density.

you can't roll a pocket sprung and memory foam mattress up without damaging it.

    Hi Tim,

I was about to purchase a Body Impressions Spa Sensations 25cm Somnio Memory Foam (super king sized) mattress online, until I spotted the above comment in one of your previous posts.

This mattress supposedly comes vacuum-packed, folded & rolled by the manufacturer in a box, (as shown for a single mattress on this site: http://www.bedstar.co.uk/shop/customer/product.php?productid=33374&cat=&page=1) which was one of the supporting reasons for my choice due to the ease of delivery for a narrow staircase and the wheels on the box etc.

"For your convenience and to ensure your mattress arrives in the very best condition, Body Impressions carefully compress and roll each mattress into a strong wheeled box with a pull along handle, making positioning into the room of your choice effortless."

I am not familiar with this brand of mattress, and would be making the purchase through a different website - but I would really appreciate your opinion on the condition of the mattress if it is a) Pocket Sprung and Memory Foam and b) packaged in the way described above.

Without the option of trying this mattress in a store first, I also note that the returns policy for the website I was going to use states that items removed from their vacuum-packing are not eligible. Any assurance (or otherwise) that you can give me regarding this brand and/or mattress model would be great.

    Thanks in advance,
    SamF

This appears to be, or should I say it must be one of the foam encapsulated pocket spring/memory foam mattresses, otherwise there would be no way they could roll a mattress that contained springs up that small. A few manufacturers are now selling this type of mattress and are jumping on to the band wagon caused by the demand for pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses. What they do is use smaller, and often less in number pocket springs. By doing this they can still get away with calling it pocket sprung/memory foam, but it isn't the same thing, and is far cheaper to manufacture.

One give away that they have made this mattress as cheap as possible to manufacture is the density of the memory foam. The optimum density should be between 60 and 70kg per m3, although 55 to 80kg is acceptable depending on personal preference. The memory foam should also be no less than 2" and no more than 2.5" deep.
  • Thanks Tim!
I did wonder that no mention was made of the number of springs, and I certainly would not normally consider a mattress that is predominantly foam-based; so I will explore other options.
At ~£500 on sale it is not exactly priced at the lowest end!

With memory foam mattress, what is the difference between hand tufted and micro quilted finish. Which one is better finish to buy? Tim, please I wouldl ike your opinion on the Apollo dual memory foam mattress? It is about £200 more expensive than the Madrid. Thanks

Most bed stores put between 400 and 500% mark up on beds. So it's a case of if you believe the full price or not.

I know they are a bit big aren't they. Saying that I'm not going to set up a web page with smaller pics just for when I answer a question on quilting
