  • My son is off to UWE in Bristol today, he couldn't get into halls as it was full with a 600 student waiting list so has had to go into a shared house. He is driving himself there this morning as he wants to have his car there. I've been down to have a look at the house, wish I hadn't as I think it is really shabby but didn't tell him, as he obviously thinks it is fantastic!! We have had a practice run chatting on Face Time! I am not worried as he is is a sensible, lovely boy who is very sociable, and we have sent him with enough food to keep him going until Christmas, but I will miss him desperately and will probably have a few tears tonight :-(

We're going to Cumbria too! Which one? We're going to lancaster We're going with dd1, had to hire a van last min today, ds1 having to stay at home as he can't fit in van. Hope all goes well for you tomorrow

    Your daughter will LOVE Lancaster.

I went there, my little brother still studies there and the boyfriend, well he never left. Got a job for a company based on the campus.

I'm so ridiculously jealous of all the young sprogs heading to Uni. It's shocking that i graduated over 2 years ago now.

    G. We to are going to uni of cumbria on Sunday ,Lancaster site not sure if all will fit in car
    Ha ha

We were going to Penrith, had to do two cars so that Dad and little sister could come too. All was going well until halfway home on the return journey we got a text to say we'd set off with one of her boxes still in the car! So an about turn was done to return the box, arrived to find DD with all the other new students in her block all in the kitchen chatting and organizing where things were going and planning what they were doing in the afternoon.

Not sure why but the house does feel quieter already even though she was always at work on a Saturday and Sunday so wouldn't have been here at this time anyway.

I hope that everyone elses trips went safely and all DD's and DS's are settled in.
  • My dd has now graduated and come home in June - or rather I think she has. Since then she has been away at various festivals, sporting competitions and holidays and is off again in a few days.

She enjoyed the student life so much that she is looking at a pgce for next year in an attempt to keep it going even longer.

As many of the posters above have said they soon settle down and don't worry about many of the things that we do.

I look at it as a way of introducing them to an independant life but with a lot of support from tutors, lecturers and hall staff as well as wll the friends that they will make.

    good luck to them all
I need to make a new list for 2014
think of something to put on it!:rotfl:
Try harder for 2014 as I never managed it in 2012 or 2013

Oh, we are currently in Bristol too, having brought DS from Suffolk. It's a long way so we thought we'd have a mini break, just hubby & me getting used to no kids after about 22 years!
Bristol seems fab. DS didn't get into uni halls but is in vastly expensive private halls in the city centre. Going to be quite a trip up to campus, but good for the night life :rotfl:. Just hope he makes lectures in time...

he is doing nursing & we are so proud of him...
And the house will be so quiet:o
  • Yes, Bristol seems good for night life, lots going on! Just spoke to my DS, he is fine, worried about what to do with all the food we have sent him with as nobody else in the house seems to be sharing, am sure they will all sit down over the next few days and sort the domestic details out. He is going to be doing a Maths degree:eek: so hopefully might turn into the next Martin Lewis!!
Very odd without him here, keep thinking he is upstairs in his room or expecting to see him rummaging in the fridge!
  • The freezer in DS's kitchen is empty apart from all the stuff we sent him with, including his favourite pasta sauce frozen in individual portions to start him off, and a spag Bol sauce big enough to feed his flat mates. He is hoping they will sometimes share meals. We thought it might come in handy this Fresher's week as they will be too busy partying to think of cooking...
We also left a tin of Heros in the kitchen for all to share & that's gone down v well ;)

We've just dropped our youngest off at her halls, the house feels empty already. Me and OH have just worked out that it's almost 26 years since it's been just us two. Eldest left a few years ago and now the baby has gone. :(

DD is only about 15 miles away so it's not too bad, far enough for her to have some independence and experience student life but close enough if she needs us. :D

Same situation here , son is starting 2nd year at Durham studying Economics , baby girl off down to London UCL studying Biomedics. Must admit not looking forward to the empty nest syndrome.
