iPhone 5 - what are we expecting?

For so many reasons I would agree with you.
No the iphone is not better than my SLR
Nor better than my Camcorder
Nor better than my Small digital Camera
Nor better than my Laptop for browsing the net
Nor better than my sat nav in my car
I agree its not the best at anything... why would it try to be all and everything.
But it does do everything great, IMO, like my 3GS, but significantly better, and importantly in todays world... FASTER.
Pictures, its not about the keeping of them and raving about the quality, we are nott publishing them in a magazing, maybe a 6x4, printed at home, so it doesnt matter how good the pic is, its about how good the paper and the printer is, its more however about what it means and represents, the SLR I have, that is MINT at taking photos its a massive pain in the !!!!, and I use it infrequently as its not as simple as taking out of my pocket. Photos are more about facebook now more than anything else... instagram aside (owned by facebook lol)
I know its not a kindle... but imagine this. Going to the beach for a day.
Dont forget your newspapers, your books, or your kindles, your MP3 player, your brick of a phone, your DS, gameboy, or PSlite and your TV for the room and DVD player for the flight, the chargers for all them packed and left at the room, trying to juggle the one socket you have to charge everything, whilst trying to meet your baggage allowance on ryan air. On top of your rasta blaster, your laptop to do some work on, and your diary to organise your meetings. (ps dont forget the lotion and the towel, and your trunks)
No its not meant to be the best
Convenience is what its about... im IN! lolPlan

There is an argument that the 'best' camera is the one you have with you at the time - and I almost agree with that.
However, if I *know* i'm going to take photos then a phone is still a dodgy replacement to my compact camera. It's just about the sensor size - and that's a physical issue that only clever physics could fix. If I *know* i want to take 'good' (e.g. portrait) photos then my compact pales into comparison with my SLR
I would say that mobile phones now take at least as good photos as I use to take in my youth with my Olympus mju II 35mm camera (http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Olympus_mju_II).
Reading on the beach? Take a book!0 -
hold on. you are saying a phone(any phone) is a replacement for an Xbox?
I still have a dedicated Sat Nav,it lives in the car. you know, where I'm going to use it
another vote for a dedicated MP3 player. in my case ipods. the main being a 160gb ipod classic
Kindle replacement? come on. yes you can read on the phone screen, but its no rival
diary, email etc. basic functions that phones have covered for years
camera, well its fine for random snaps, however for days out etc I want decent quality
SO when your walking or on your bike, good luck removing the sat nav from the car... its not like its a tom tom... its for the car and only the car... what about on hols when you hire one, or on a bike, and train it to london... oh dear, you really missed the point. Im not going to break them all down.
Your talking to someone who lived on xbox who was ranked in the top 100 on PGR4 (which took AGES, hasnt turned it on in 12 months... why, cause I can play games with friends over the net on a personal device in the same way. Its not about the Game, but playability. One game I downloaded on Ipad... PACMAN... I also have it on the xbox... thats comparing like for like, and two paid games on both devices... call me nostalgic if you like... fine.Plan

Just cos people can afford something doesn't mean it's a priority for them, though. If someone's got a decent camera on their phone why should they shell out again for another camera, where the quality improvement in most people's eyes is going to be fairly marginal, and especially if it's just going to sit at home most of the time.
Also you might say that the photos are "poor", but 3 years ago they would be probably considered quite good quality. And in 3 years the photos taken today with a "good" compact camera will look poor in comparison to those from a brand new 2015 camera. The photos of my youth are probably poor, especially those taken on a "top of the range at the time" 2MP fuji digital camera, but I don't really care, they are good enough that I can still look at them and enjoy the memories!
Personally I doubt I'll buy another compact camera again (as I said though, I do have a DSLR which gets taken on holiday, organised days out, other important occasions, etc). The great thing with my phone camera is that I have photos from times where I never would have had a "proper" camera on me, but I'm really glad I have the memories. For me that's worth a bit of a reduction in quality.
I'm still waiting to bump into David Tennant near work, then I'll be really glad of my phone camera... well a girl can dream...0 -
The amount of memorable memories ove captured with my poor camera will always be there for me to look at.
The regret, not having a better camera phone... not a better camera. As the better camera, would still not have been in my pocket.
Think back to 2008, and try and remember what you was doing thinking, and seeing, where you was, who you was with... THEN... click back to 2008 on facebook timeline... tears of joy will appear. :-)
Its not what it is, its how you use it that matters.Plan

I was looking forward to the iPhone 5 launch, but I wasn't really blown away with it... happy to just stick with my 4s and enjoy the benefits of the free iOS 6!0

I see the thread is still chugging along, mainly with comments from those who don't like the iPhone......

No, I know...and it's the fact that it's not a priority for people that bothers me. Was a time, people used to "take photos" as a hobby, now it's just something that you do when you're doing flaming sambucas. Was a time, people used to "listen to music" as a hobby, now people just don't.
I agree that the quality of photos is always relative to what's available at the time, but the point is that most people don't care (or can't tell, as you suggest) enough to get something better.
Anyway, cameraphones are coming along slowly, before long they'll have gotten rid of compact cameras from the market and will take good enough pictures for most people's needs.0 -
BTW looks like most tariffs have been announced, there's a round up here

Your posts really do make me chuckle! You seem quite insecure as an iphone user and dont like to read peoples negative comments.
Ive never owned an iphone and the reason for that is because I can get all the features of an iphone that I will use on an android device for a lower price.
Ive had the HTC Desire, Galaxy S2 and now have the Galaxy S3. I enjoy technology and have a house full of gizmos and gadgets.
Ive been reading a lot about the iphone 5. If it had been good enough to tempt me away from the S3, I would have traded in and moved across. I dont stick with a certain brand or product, I move to a product that fulfils my needs.
I agree that the original iphone, iphone 3 and iphone 3gs changed the mobile phone world for ever. Truly inspirational products. It seems however that Apple have been overtaken and are struggling to catch up with other manufaturers.
Maybe you should open your eyes more and stop being negative on people that post negative comments on Apple. Everyones entitiled to an opinion. Theres millions of people out there like me that have no fixed loyalty and that will quite happily switch to a better product - Its what keeps companies on their toes. Release a poor product and people will move elsewhere. The only problem being is that Appple fans cant seem to understand this.0
