their mistake not mine, why should i repay the money?!

hi everyone, im new to this site. i wondered if anybody could help me, ive looked around and it seems friendly! i have just been to my bank at about 12pm and i asked for £150, my book was printed and it said i had withdrawn £150, along with the slip i signed. the assistant then counted out £250 and handed it over to me. i thought she had misheard me and taken £250 out of my accoutn so i didnt bother saying anything. i got home and then soon after i got a call asking if i had been paid £250 by mistake becuase their cctv showed i had. i counted the money again and rang them back to confirm i had. i then got told there is 2 ways, either i go back and pay the £100 back to them, or i get £100 taken out of my account. i wasnt happy to think that they were demanding the money back becuase they had made a mistake. i aksed for the money to be taken from my account, but i wasnt happy at all. Could anybody tell me as to ether they think this is acceptable? i feel robbed.

    Hi,

I can understand how you feel, their mistake but its like you've got the blame.

But as I'm sure they will say, you still have that extra £100.00 so youcould pay that back in to cover what the bank took out.

Then your balance at least will be as it should have been if the cashier had only taken out £150.00

yes i know i could, that wasnt really my point. i dont mind having an extra £100 out of my accoutn and in my pocket, but its just the principle of it. i feel like the victim and there should be sme sort of goodwill gesture sent out with a letter i think. i dont think that ringing customers up and telling them they have been overpaid is the way to do it.

Er, no. It's not you that has been robbed, it's the bank. They made a mistake and they need to put it right - would you feel the same if you were £100 short?
    Not even wrong

Return the money next time you go to town, and ask them to pay your bus fare.

ha ha. the banks are making all this money and then they ring me up becuase they have made an error. i dont think it would have been that easy if i had been given £100 too little, i dont think they would have been willing to give it back very easily.

Of course ! you need compensation for the terrible trauma that has been inflicted by this uncaring, greedy bank.

I would have lied and said, the £150 was for a second hand bike (for example) which you handed to the guy in cash, and he counted it and said thanks.

You dont have his name or number or know how to contact him. You met him at the local market.

I would have also suggested to your bank to learn how to count. And if your were for whatever reason given the wrong amount you dont have it now so why should you be out of pocket?

Bit late now. I wonder how forth coming they would have been if you had given them £250 and they had credited £150. Helpful... I think not.

lying isn't the answer - essentially what was just suggested is theft - whether it's from a big bank or not! Just tell them that you're annoyed - it was their mistake and could you please make me a goodwill gesture as a result of them taking up your time through no fault of their own - if you ask nicely then you might get - but being dishonest & making up stories isn't the way forward
nothing to see here, move along...
