  • Hi all,

I have been lurking for a few weeks now so hope you don't mind me joining in...a warning though I ask lots of questions :o!

I am here supporting my Hubby, who has a lot of weight to loose (although of course I love him to bits and he still lights my fire shall we say!). He has steadily gained weigh over the last 10 years and although he is a big tall fella who won't ever be skinny, his health and self-confidence are suffering lots.

I wouldn't mind loosing half a stone but I am along for the ride and hope to make this a fresh start for the whole family so it is easier for him.

There isn't a hope of him going to a group and to be honest our budget doesn't really stretch that far so I am relying on support and advise from my best friend who is a SW member (who has donated us some books etc) and hopefully you lovely ladies and gents here.

Our diet is actually quite balanced and I cook a lot from scratch thankfully so am hoping SW could be quite good for us. We have spent the last week delving into the books and being nosey on this thread and have made a start with counting syns and following EE. Payday is Friday so I plan to stock up on storecupboard essentials so start properly on Monday 1st October.

So far the main obstacles we have found is bread and hunger! We have always brought Warburtons Seeded Batch bread and going over to wholemeal has been quite traumatic lol! Is it me or does it just taste of nothing and have the texture of cardboard?! Any recommendations for HexB bread that is reasonably tasty?

Is the Hex B bread list in the food optimising book a strict list? eg. it doesn't mention weetabix just weetabix mini's (and from a budgeting point of view and to avoid weighing as much as poss, I prefer to buy own brand weetabix).

As for hunger we have both gone to bed famished the last two nights and inbetween meals too.

    Yesterday Hubby had...

B: 2 slices wm toast with a scraping of marg (2 syns?)
L: Savoury Rice with sliced chicken.
D: Salad (peppers, cucumber, lettuce, carrot, celery, new potatoes, pork steaks, sml amount of grated cheese (2 syns) and a little dressing (2 syns)
Snacks: mullerlight yoghurts x1, bananas x2, apples x2
FF Milk in coffee throughout the day (HexA

    Today he had...

B: 2 weetabix (counting these as HexB until told otherwise) with milk (HexA)
L: Brown rice with bacon, peas and scrambled eggs, banana and apple.
D: HM Celery soup (with extra veg thrown in) with bacon, potato skins (although more like wedges as I we were starved lol). Banana and mullerlight yoghurt.
    Snacks: fruit
FF milk in coffee to finish of his HexA.

He is sitting here quite hungry poor boy and I'm not sure what to do! There are only so many apples and bananas he can eat and we can afford to buy lol!

I have written a novel and I would say I am sorry but I am quite in need of a helping hand right now and hope you can show me the way!:j

SmithyJules, have you had a look at the sample menu that is on the SW website? This should give you more ideas on how to plan each day.
What syns have you and hubby had today as none are written down you can have up to 15 a day so that packet of crisps or small choccie bar are still available to snack on. If hungry between meals why not try the mug shots? Depending where you shop these can be as cheap as 34p each.
Also 2 weetabix does equal the HEB so you are on the right track there. Are you measuring out your milk to make sure you are not overdoing the syns cos if you are using an amount with cereal and have tea/coffee during the day its quite easy to go over and into your syn allocation without realising.
If following the EE plan theres no reason why you cant have larger portions of the meals on the plate as long as its balanced out with 1/3rd superfree to help supress the hunger provding you are aware of any possible syns that are used in making them and allow for that when having treats aswell.

Could he have a bowl of chopped up fruit with a muller light on top with his breakfast? or total 0% greek yogurt is free and honey with that is lovely and only a small amount of syns. I like porridge for breakfast with mashed banana because it is really filling.

How about jacket potatoes for lunch? I have them if I am feeling really hungry, sometimes with beans or tuna and salad. The 1% mugshots are free, might be worth a try? You should never feel hungry on slimming world - you are more likely to stick to it if you are full up :) There are tons of free foods to have so just pig out on those :rotfl:

Hi Diane. I find doing Green days cheapest & I shop at Aldi as much as possible.

Smithy I find eating bread always makes me hungrier so i've pretty much cut it out of my diet.
Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.
  • Thank you for the support. I will stick with this new way of eating, and hope my body sorts itself out soon!! (And that the spots disappear soon too!)

Second weigh in this morning and 2lbs off. The new Christmas dress might become a reality!!

Hi, I've just started Slimming World a couple of weeks ago lost 2lb then stayed the same, struggling to get into it really, not that i don't know the plan just a bit reluctant to give up the junk food! I just wonder if anyone else finds themselves spending a fortune on food because of the diet even though there's no special food to buy! Every time i've tried slimming world it happens. Does anyone manage to do the plan on the same budget they had before or have you found you spend more?

My food budget did go up quite a bit to start with, buying fresh fruit and veg is a lot more expensive than chocolate! Now I am well and truely into slimming world and I have worked out ways to do it cheaper - like going to Lidl to get fruit and veg, meal planning, I shop around quite a bit to get the best bargains.

  • SmithyJules - we used to be told that where there was an own brand equivalent e.g. own brand weetabix, as long as we checked that it wasn't completely nutritionally different and the calories, fat and esp the fibre values were roughly similar you could do an own brand swop.

you need to up your food if you are hungry, you shouldn't be hungry on SW. either increase your meal portion sizes or find SW snacks you like. Cold meats are usually a good one as are HEA cheese triangles as you have a few throughout the day.

it can be expensive but you just have to keep an eye out for bargains. DH and i buy all our veg frozen now. We know we will use all of it, its there when we want it and sometimes it has higher vitamin contents because its frozen soon after picking not transported and then sat in tesco until you buy it. we used to buy so much and it just got wasted and never eaten so now we are really making sure we eat what we buy.

also check out your supermarkets reduced sections. the fresh stuff will find its way in there and most of it is free. tonight DH and i managed to find 2 fillet steaks in our reduced bit for about £5 for the two along with two massive bags of stir fry veg going for 25p each that are currently in the freezer waiting to be used. keeps your meal plans different too as you never know whats in there. i love rooting through the bins and seeing what i can make and having a proper ready steady cook moment :rotfl:
  • Hi Steph, good point about the milk, will add a small bottle to my "stock up list" so I can measure out his quota in the morning and he'll know what he's got then. He's been having FF milk as he used to have cream in his coffee (3 cups a day) and I thought it might help him enjoy his coffee without being tempted to slip up not measuring the elmlea!
As for syns, I think we've been trying to avoid them a fair bit but maybe this is where we are going wrong? It seems you can have 5-15 per day...if you have a lot of weight to loose do you have less syns?
Haven't looked into the superfree 1/3 thing yet, so much to learn!

kjmtidea, thanks for the ideas, he loves a jacket potato, any idea if these freeze well? I think I am going to have to cook a bit extra throughout the week (chilli, bolognese, soup and spuds) to make it easier for him at lunch times. Hubby is at home 2 days a week with our son and at uni 2 days and I am home the rest so can help to organise him then lol.

My memory is awful so I think I am going to sit down tomorrow night and have a good think about how to get started and write down my ideas.

Thanks so much for the welcome!
  • evilsquid1603, such a helpful post thank you! And spot on about the wastage. Our budget for food is quite limited what with nappies to buy and two young ones and I often find I am throwing out veg much to my annoyance! I will def look into the frozen veg. I looooveee the reduced section, but most weeks we get our shopping delivered A to help us budget and B because the thought of Tesco's with my two herberts and all the tempting things on the shelves every week is more than I can bear lol.
