  • You sound so bitter Absolutebounder and I wonder why. Listen this isn't for everyone and I for one just don't seem to be losing whilst others have lost lots but I have other medical issues which I believe are part of my problems. I know a lot of people are upset by your harsh comments but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and try and answer a few of your points because although I'm not losing weight I do think that this is a really sound plan and a really healthy way to eat.
Where do I start? the whole program stinks of a rip off.
starting with a bit of psychology. The advice sits around the theory that you are fat so you should cut out fat from your diet. They are not asking us to cut out fat - they are asking us to reduce the amount of fat by using spray oil and low-fat products. Personally I think 45g of 17% mozzarella cheese a day is a really good quantity of cheese which contains protein, calcium and fat.Complete and utter non sequiter. Fat in the diet is essential for life. Your brain is the fattiest organ in your body. there are several essential fatty acids that your body can not synthesize.
calling a food a syn is stupid. Much of what SW calls syns are actually full of vital nutrients (google fat soluble vitamins) but apart from that what does eating "sins" do for people. many that have weight issues also have los self esteem and now you want to make them out to be bad in some way. As another lady already pointed out - they don't mean "sins" and there is nothing written anywhere to say that any foods are disallowed. What they are trying to teach you is to make healthy choices of the good foods and to use the other foods (syns) in moderation - again it's a learning process and not just about losing weight but about re-education.A few other I have seen boast how many sins they binged on (rather like boasting about an ASBO)
Weigh ins and the psychological pressure that goes with it are another bad area. This is exactly the point we've been discussing for a couple of days - why do some people stay to group and some people just come to be weighed and there are some who don't go to group at all. It's whatever suits the individual and again, what works for each one individually. They should be targeting on shape and not weight. ie if you are a size 20 you target would be to slim to a size 18. There are actually a couple of ladies who reached target and realised that the scale numbers are not what's important but the clothes size and how they look. Some even said that if they were to go to the number that they had thought in their head as the right weight for their height they would be too thin. As we get older our bodies change and sensibly most ladies on here have seen that as they lose weight it's not about the number on the scales. Feeling good that you lost 4lbs in a week is just plain stupid you were most likely to have lost muscle and water, not fat. 4lbs of fat is around 12000 Kcal or 6 days recommended calorie intake for the average woman:eek: You might manage it if you were doing a couple of marathons every week:rotfl: You have to get some perspective here - most people who lose 4lb in a week are either newbies or people who've had a few weeks of STS or putting on a pound - the 4lb loss is usually a culmination of a few weeks work.
Now a bit of factual common sense. Food 100 yrs ago contained far more fat. A joint of pork or beef would have had by todays standards a large fat layer round it. yet obesity was not common. now we eat far less fat and obesity is common and rising. The reason? scams like the diet industry and so called healthy foods. The reason is the lifestyle we have today compared to then. A hundred years ago people worked on the land, there were no cars, there was scarcity of food and of course there was no technology as there is today. How many of us grew up playing outside in the street and we're only talking about 30 or 40 years ago compared to today's kids who spend huge amounts of time in front of computers and televisions.next time you are in tescos look at the so called fat free stuff and see how much sugar and un natural chemicals is residing in it. Aklso did you know that the body converts unused sugars into triglycerides (fat) so here you are playing with a diet that creates artey blocking fats.
The reason anyone gets overweight is because they eat more food than they need (simple laws of physics) You are absolutely correct and that's another thing we learn on SW - portion control. By using the 1/3 plate of SF foods rule we are re-educating ourselves to eat sensibly and smaller amounts of the other food groups.Following a stupid program like counting syns doesnt stop you overeating. people above have said they are "stuffed" I think you misunderstand the program or haven't read it properly - the program isn't based on eating only syns - the syns are added after everything else if you still need them.
Your body has a mechanism for telling you when you have had enough but people over ride it in a number of ways but one to watch is fruit. most fruit contains amongst the good things Fructose which interferes with Leptin which is our natural chemical fuel gauge. Again this is something we have discussed here and perhaps you should read some of the back pages of the forum - it's usually one of the first things we try to cut back on if we find that we're not losing weight and most people find once they cut down on the quantity of fruit they're eating they starting losing again.
So if you want to lose weight and keep it off. (most people lose with things like SW or WW and put it on again There are several ladies on here and at SW groups around the country who have lost weight with SW and kept it off for a great many years and we're not talking just a handful. If you learn how to maintain and not go back to old habits they you'll keep it off. ) then address the issues that cause you to overeat in the first place instead of wasting money on fad diets.

I hope that helps and I really do suggest that you read up on the program.

How did I forget that! Thank you so much.

All done! For those who don't know how - go to the name of the pain in the !!!!! (top left corner of post) and click on it. Menu appears with ignore option at the bottom. Click on that and said pain in the !!!!! disappears as if by magic to go and irritate another thread.

Pure genius! Thank you for sharing how to do this =)
Shall i cook the lentils first or put them in the slow cooker raw? I normally cook my curry in the oven and just add as much water as i think i need but i'll be at work all day and i am frightened that if i don't add enough water the lentils will soak it all up and start a fire in the slow cooker that or it will a hard congealed mess when i get in!

I would second soaking the lentils first :)

Can anyone help me on my lentil issue in the slow cooker?

I soak all grains (lentils, dried peas, barley) except rice but wash rice well before using.

You are so gracious to respond like that mm. Having 'met' that poster on another thread (also about diets) my reaction was that s/he is desperate to lose weiight but can't and so has ended up all bitter and cynical and is now trying to spoil threads for everyone else.

That's nice of you Maman and that's the impression I also get about the poster but as I have my own constant battle with not losing weight I kind of understand a bit of the bitterness although I don't let mine shine through - at least I hope I don't :D

My thoughts were that at least you were prepared to engage in debate rather than use the Im an ostrich herd mentality and hide from anyone who challenges their knowledge.
I have no weight issues and have been buying size 34 inch trousers for the last 20 yrs.
what I do have issues with is a multi billion industry that preys on peoples fears and insecurities with half truths. People get overweight because they take in more than they expend. the reason they overeat is the problem yet the diet industry does nothing to correct this but instead sells you more rubbish.
In other words they are treating the symptom without any attempt at treating the problem.
Is that really a wrong point of view?
Who I am is not important. What I do is.

  • Consultant-less groups can be more fun, the "random" consultant factor makes for interesting image therapy. Sadly my group has been consultantless since I began, funnily enough the new one starts next week.
I'm a strong believer that the people that pay good money to lose the weight like to have some support, talk to people that can help, but there is a balance between giving that support and getting the "bums on seats" Such an attitude that my idealistic old fashioned "customer is always right" doesn't sit well with. :( Seriously not sure about going to group anylonger as my countdown finished so won't be out of pocket, just go it alone.
