Sorry. i thought this was a money saving site. when one sees people being taken advantage of by large companies purveying incredibly dodgy diet advice I thought it was my duty to say so

    You thought wrong.

considering the losses we have on here, i'd say it was entirely sensible diet advice that appears to be working rather well!

Welcome to all the newbies this is a great and supportive [mostly but will ignore the one unsupportive one] forum. Big well done to all you losers :T:T:T:T:A

I have had a terrible week, unexpected * broke through and messed with my head as well as my tummy. Chocolate attacked me from all directions and forced its way into my mouth, would have been so rude to spit it out don't you think? :p
Anyway bad week equals big gain [2lb] no-one to blame but myself and my hormones so there ya go.
Will try harder to get back on plan this week just in time for the 'proper' * to start  think I'm at THAT age :(
Its not what you do but the way that you do it, thats what get results :T

can anyone please tell me of a cheese sauce that i could make please that hardly has any syns, i realy fancy cauliflower cheese at some point next week.... thankyou x

Amie, I make mine with a tub of 1/2% soft white cheese beaten together with an egg and some stock and seasoning. I stir some of the grated cheese into it and then pour it over the cauliflower and top with the rest of the cheese. If you use mozzarella then you're allowed 45g per person which is a really generous portion.

Absolutebounder I'm curious to know what you think is "incredibly dodgy diet advice" as my understanding is that this is a really healthy and well-balanced plan and one of the few approved by the medical profession.

Try this, use your Healthy Extra milk with quark - if making it to go with pasta, I have used the pasta water (after cooking the pasta in it) to thicken it without incuring syns. It's not the thickest sauce though. Or use it with quark and a kerry low low for extra cheese taste.
I am told that microwaving the kerry low low on top of precooked pasta makes for a good cheese pasta to but not tried it.

Where do I start? the whole program stinks of a rip off.
starting with a bit of psychology. The advice sits around the theory that you are fat so you should cut out fat from your diet. Complete and utter non sequiter. Fat in the diet is essential for life. Your brain is the fattiest organ in your body. there are several essential fatty acids that your body can not synthesize.
calling a food a syn is stupid. Much of what SW calls syns are actually full of vital nutrients (google fat soluble vitamins) but apart from that what does eating "sins" do for people. many that have weight issues also have los self esteem and now you want to make them out to be bad in some way. A few other I have seen boast how many sins they binged on (rather like boasting about an ASBO)
Weigh ins and the psychological pressure that goes with it are another bad area. They should be targeting on shape and not weight. ie if you are a size 20 you target would be to slim to a size 18. Feeling good that you lost 4lbs in a week is just plain stupid you were most likely to have lost muscle and water, not fat. 4lbs of fat is around 12000 Kcal or 6 days recommended calorie intake for the average woman:eek: You might manage it if you were doing a couple of marathons every week:rotfl:
Now a bit of factual common sense. Food 100 yrs ago contained far more fat. A joint of pork or beef would have had by todays standards a large fat layer round it. yet obesity was not common. now we eat far less fat and obesity is common and rising. The reason? scams like the diet industry and so called healthy foods. next time you are in tescos look at the so called fat free stuff and see how much sugar and un natural chemicals is residing in it. Aklso did you know that the body converts unused sugars into triglycerides (fat) so here you are playing with a diet that creates artey blocking fats.
The reason anyone gets overweight is because they eat more food than they need (simple laws of physics) Following a stupid program like counting syns doesnt stop you overeating. people above have said they are "stuffed"
Your body has a mechanism for telling you when you have had enough but people over ride it in a number of ways but one to watch is fruit. most fruit contains amongst the good things Fructose which interferes with Leptin which is our natural chemical fuel gauge.
So if you want to lose weight and keep it off. (most people lose with things like SW or WW and put it on again ) then address the issues that cause you to overeat in the first place instead of wasting money on fad diets.
Who I am is not important. What I do is.

Thank you for identifying where you are misinformed for us all to see.
The 'syns' in Slimming World do not stand for 'sins' it stands for 'synergy' and it is accepted that these are needed- in fact the method actually recommends including them in your daily plans.

Furthermore the concept actually relies on the age old 'everything in moderation' as well as encouraging members to increase their daily activity by offering a series of activity awards alongside the weight loss elements.

You mention the psychological effects upon members, my personal specialist area as a British Psychological Society accredited graduate as well as having a forensic psychology Masters degree,I understand your opinion however the group dynamics center around a culture of encouragement and support not a 'name and shame' culture. The presence of a peer group which has shared goals and a collective purpose actually aids rather than hinders an individuals progress.

And just to add, years ago when food had more fat there was less obesity as individuals were far more active with kids playing out and adults working hard, often manual, jobs meaning that they needed the additional fat. Society has changed and food is now lower in fat to meet with the different requirements of a modern lifestyle.

Finally, as another member of this thread pointed out this is a lifestyle plan which is recommended by health professionals. Many doctors were in a scheme that could give overweight patients membership to a Slimming World group and 12weekly sessions free. The plan is also the only one recommended by midwives to pregnant women in the UK.

But thank you for sharing your concerns and misconceptions - if you do have any questions about the plan please ask and I'm sure one of us will be able to answer.

  • Oh God i haven't been on here for weeks and there is a shiny new thread - i thought i had been deserted. I have been on SW and EE for 4 weeks and I have lost 8lbs in that time so very very pleased.

I have dug my slow cooker out and i am going to cook a vegetable and lentil curry tomorrow (cooked that twice last week and i swear it is my weight loss secret as lots of super free and filling lentils.) Anyway i need some help from you peeps please,

Shall i cook the lentils first or put them in the slow cooker raw? I normally cook my curry in the oven and just add as much water as i think i need but i'll be at work all day and i am frightened that if i don't add enough water the lentils will soak it all up and start a fire in the slow cooker that or it will a hard congealed mess when i get in!

Am i getting myself in a state unnecessarily - quite new to the slow cooker lark!
