Confused.com Motor Mate (argh!)

As a bit of money saving geek, I was fascinated when I read about Confused.coms Motor Mate software on Martins Weekly email.

So off I went and downloaded it, thinking that as I'm on hols this week I could easily rack up £25 quid and get a driving assesment

But it fails miserably, and a quick check on andriod market seems to back up my suspicions that its darn impossible to accumilate 250miles as it seems to reset every evening:mad:

Anybody else hit this problem

Have had exactly the same problem. I have driven over 400 miles yet it is telling me I still have 249.05 miles to go before MotorMark is available!

Same for me on my HTC Desire S, the total records only the last trip I did and does not add up the miles since download.

I have however had a mail from confused.com about the car cradle/charger as my journey to work is over 25 miles anyway so I have hit one of the milestones.

I estimate I have done about 400 miles since downloading it so hopefully it will get fixed and £25 in the bank.

  • I had the same problem, but if you go on the website and click on the link to claim the cradle/£25, it should work anyway if you know you've done enough miles. My app hadn't updated, but when I filled out the form on the website it said it was successful both times. I'm just waiting now to see if the stuff gets posted to me.

Do you really want to give away driving style and tracking information to a 3rd party (with insurance connections) without knowing how that information is going to be used, now and in the future? It may also be using up data allowances.

The app has started working correctly for me and has added up the journeys and given a score. I have put the claim in for £25 as well.

The app requested an update on Wednesday night and has been working ok since then I think.

It is extemely dubious on the scores and stars though so i wouldn't rely on the technology to price my insurance!

What motormate seems to do is calculate your time taken to drive between 2 points and then roughly works out what maximum speed you should be going at.

If you drive slowly enough in a town/city i.e. get stuck behind a learner driver going at 20mph for half your journey, you get 5 stars.

If you speed on the motorway but don't go to far above the speed limit you get 3 stars.

If you drive a route and there is no traffic but you stick to the speed limit again you get 3 stars. (Remember car speedometers are inaccurate.)

If you drive the same route and there is some traffic which slows your journey down you get 4 stars.

It pays no attention to how you corner or brake.

Oh and even with the update if someone rings your phone while you are driving, the app shuts down. However I did all my mileage in 10 days and I won't be travelling those roads any more so I'm not complaining.

I'm on unlimited data subject to a fair use policy. As I spend most of my days inside buildings my phone automatically switches to WIFI.

Mine worked fine on a Galaxy Ace. Got a Motormark of 71 and an e-mail after 252 miles requesting I submit my claim for the £25 which I did a couple of days ago.

The scoring system was very dubious though. I found it similar in some areas to the above. Always got 3 stars when using a motorway/dual carraigeway, but always got 4/5 on other roads whether in traffic or not.

How do you go about making a claim? I did over 250 just over a week ago but havn't had an email from them for either the car charger or £25 and I'm sure I hit both targets!

EDIT: Sorry found it now. Couldn't remember which email I registered it with so hope I got the right one!
