Yes via google play. I think it's the second most popular free app!

Never found out what the problem with Deanos was, so I can't be sure if it was because he had already used an ICS version or something else - it was just something that seemed different to others whom like me were all going from stock 2.3. - I wondered if somehow the 4.03 upgrade retained some element of 2.3 it needed - seems totally unlikely. (I still think maybe a issue with his SD card or prep.)

In theory - I can't say I have done it but the option to go back to 'out the box' stock 2.3 first then doing the ICS upgrade should cover anything.

It should even sort things if it goes horribly wrong. The full forced update (both volume keys held, update folder) rewrites the lot.

The change from 2.3 to 4.0.3 is pretty drastic, the whole memory layout changes - this is why I like the full method rather than installing utilities to flash in parts.

As the SD card full update overwrites the lot in one go, in principle going over one ICS version with another should work fine.

I have just tried it without success.

I formated the sd card, unzipped V100R001C203B940 which left me with a folder called dload (608mb). I put this folder and nothing else on the sd card.

Before switching off the phone I made sure fastboot was off. I then took out the sim and powered up holding the volume + and - buttons. It started installing the update and got halfway through it before an 'Update Failed' message came up.

Fortunately when I switched on the phone again it still had the Vodaphone ICS on it!

Do you think I might have more success following this http://huaweig300.com/huawei-g300-install-a-custom-jelly-bean-ics-rom-from-scratch/ ?

    ..

I seem to remember there were 2 folders I put onto my sd card for the upgrade - if it got half way through, failed and still booted properly on old rom it suggests it only got as far as verifying the update and maybe found it corrupt - might be worth downloading it again

Hmmm as Jethro says 1st of all try also extracting the 'META-INF' folder to the SD from the zip. It seems to be some sort of certificates.
The 1st part of the flash may be just unpacking and copying files, perhaps it then says no because the certs are missing.

Otherwise you could restoring back to stock 2.3 1st then doing it. Its the path I would go.

The other methods obviously work, but they are not for the faint hearted, I have rooted, clockwork-modded and flashed ROMs on several Android phones before and still managed to fluff it up - you need the right files for each stage depending on which Android version you are on now, be careful, some guides may not work now your on ICS - the files will write to the wrong memory.

  • Ok ..firstly i'm a total novice to android and not a techie.

My experience is that I've had a G300 for a few months and just done the Silly Goose vedrsion of the ICS update as opposed the Vodaphone one

WOW its so slick compared to the old Gingerbread version and a lot more intuitive..more Apple like if you get my drift.

No problems in the update but yesterday discovered internet was not working when outside home on non wireless. I had to go into the mobile network settings and manually input all the tesco settings and it now works ok..It had the 02 ones in it for some reason

I'm useless at operating Android applications and wondering if anyone can help..I've downloaded the 3d weather application (to replace the original gingerbread one) its a widget apparently..managed to get it on home page but its sitting there like every other application..How can I get it to auto open so its always open at the top of the page telling me how awful the weather is in the UK :)

PS with this ICS on this phone has got to be the best £100 phone bargain available?

    Thanks for your help.

I included the META-INF file but the install still failed. Perhaps as you say the file might be corrupt.

I cannot decide whether to download the file again or try the other method!

Thanks for your advice. I don't know what to do now because, as you say, the guides might not work as I am now on ICS. Do you think restoring back to 2.3 is straightforward?

Sorry to hear that, not tried going back to 2.3 but the thread suggests its straightforward 'get out of jail whatever' move.

As you say it could be the file but it seems, bearing in mind the only other person who I know this has failed for was also on ICS too (they grabbed the 1st voda release before voda pulled it again) that this is the issue, their symptoms were identical. Above seems another happy punter who went from 2.3 to V940 easily, losing count now!

I suppose it depends how badly you want clean ICS or stick with Voda one, I think worse case it fails and nothing happens,

next best case it goes to 2.3 and then fails 940 and you have to put the Voda ICS over-air update back on.

Best case of course it goes to 2.3 then up to 940 nicely.

Hi glad to have another happy camper - you got a phone that would cost another £100 if it had HTC on it.

EDIT: just reread you downloaded 3d weather to try so your question was for that, the advice I wrote below relates to the original Gingerbread weather app which it is possible to reinstall - I misread your post.

Sounds like you just put the icon for the weather on the screen not the widget. Select a home screen with some space (you can shift little used ones to next door home pages by holding and dragging sideways or to the trashcan at the top) ..
Then go into apps, select widgets tab at top, side swipe through until you see weather clocks (there are two big or small) press/hold on the desired one, phone will switch to home screen - just drop it where you want. Then you can click on it on home screen and access its settings.
