Spill the beans... on how to minimise loo paper use

  • Keep spare loo rolls in the airing cupboard. The warmth makes the paper thicker and more absorbent so you use less.

By the way Andrex "dissolves" on flushing far better than any cheap brands - we've tested this for our narrowboat loo where solubility is a must.

Simple test - take one sheet, put in jam jar half full of water and shake. If sheet is still intact - not good, either for the environment or your drains!

Using toilet paper is disgusting! If you got poo on any other part of your body would you be satisfied to smear it about with a piece of paper? In 100 years time people will read about toilet paper with the revulsion that we read about past people emptying chamber pots in the road. Take a shower!

or just chuck over the side of the boat...
  • Just go in the garden, that way you save money on bog roll and you fertilise your plants at the same time. The cat's been doing it for years, don't see why we shouldn't.
  • Hi,

I'm another "Triple Velvet" (from Costco) advocate. Quilted Velvet feels nicer, but lasts less than half as long as Triple.

Wet wipes are a serious false economy. The cheapest one I've seen mentioned on here (and also after a quick check on a supermarket website) works out at 1p/wet wipe. Assuming an average of 200 sheets/roll & 3 sheets/wipe with an average cost of 30p/roll, you are averaging 66 wipes/roll, which comes in at just under 0.5p/TP wipe. So wet wipes (although slightly more hygienic than paper alone) are approximately double the price of TP.

Personally, I try to regulate my bowels to 'perform' shortly before I plan to jump into the shower. This way, the paper does the bulk of the work and the shower gel finishes the job off properly. :-)

As for tearing a hole in a single sheet and using your finger to do the work... UUURRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Forgive my ignorance but I've never used one of these water flush washing gadgets. Will somebody explain exactly how you use them without spraying water all over your clothes and the floor?
  • My old granny always had the 'Kent Messenger' cut into little squares in her loo. Maybe we should cut up copies of 'The Sun', it would seem a fitting end to a carp newspaper.....

It's not a good idea to use newspaper, it blocks up the loo... ending up with an expensive plumbing bill! This happened when I lived in a shared house with 3 lads (I'm a woman) many years ago, and after I'd got back from a weekend away, found the loo blocked with newspaper because they were too stingy to buy loo paper... and I got blamed for it (because being the woman, the landlady thought that it was up to me to instil domesticity into the blokes...)!!!
  • We use Nicky toilet paper - nine rolls for £2 from Home Bargains or B&M. It is thick (three ply), quilted, and pretty. Some colours have added aloe vera lotion. At just over 22p for a decent sized roll, there is no need to economise or to give up your comfort.

Me too!! Discovering Nicky was a revelation... I always insist on Nicky now! It does have a nice delicate fragrance, and such amazing value!! Also nice to blow your nose on. ;)

Home Bargains is the best!!

Interesting how this thread is bringing out all the anal retentive types who have never ever posted before.....
  • I only need one sheet of Triple Velvet. Wipe once, fold it in half, wipe again, fold it in half, apply a finish wipe. Occasionally need to do this twice if had curry the night before!!
