Spill the beans... on how to minimise loo paper use

  • Many years ago when most people had to make do with newspaper, a lad was sent to the village shop on a Friday to buy a roll of toilet paper. On the Monday he was sent back to to shop with the unused roll and a request from his mother for a refund. 'Why don't you need it?' the shopkeeper asked. 'Company didn't come.' was the boys reply.
  • This is all very well, but (not to put too fine a point on it) it results in tiny bits of sh*t in the domestic water system, doesn't it? Can anyone who works in water reassure me that the domestic water system - which after all is separate from the sewage recycling - can cope with this? Or isn't it as separate as I think it is?

Or do bidets discharge into the sewage system? In which case I wonder about washing your rear end in the shower and the effects that has on public health......

All domestic waste-water ends up in the sewerage system regardless as to whether it's from your bath, kitchen-sink or lavatory, and is purified appropriately (we hope) so there's no danger of any contamination to our drinking-water if that's what was worrying you.

As to minimising loo-roll usage: I can't see a way of doing it if you're not being particularly lavish in the first place. I use about a roll a week, so at about 18-odd pence each don't find it excessive. But I do admit to having a blind-spot about buying luxury three-ply embossed and scented paper at fifty pence each. Even L!dl's cheapo recycled lav paper has shot up from 13 pence to that 18 pence recently which seems quite a large percentage (about 35% I think).

Well I could eat more white bread and less fibre etc anf then have periods of constipation so might use less paper but hardly healthy (this is partly a joke by the way)

on the flushing side, it's wasteful that we use mostly use clean fresh water just to flush. There have been attempts to change this I am sure but the usual domestic plumbing set up is so common it's going to quite hard to change it radically.
what if, for example, washing machine waste water were recycled to flush the loo?

Washing machine water is a good idea, but there would have to be enough. No worrying about having the runs and insufficient water to flush.
Water out of washers, baths and showers could be plumbed into the cystern somehow, and that may be sufficient?

personally i find nothing better than a good scoop out with my finger so long as there is a basin nearby (for washing my finger afterwards).

Quick wipe with a value baby wipe and walla, it's all like new again.

Now seriously, the 4ply from Lidl 10 for £4.8 or 16 for a fiver, it's only take three squares for no 2 and the mrs use 2 squares for her no1.
Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

Washing machines are getting more efficient and use less water but loads of water still goes down plugholes one way or another that could provide sufficient to flush loos. Washing, showers yes, and what about also recycling rain water? Of course the plumbing and storage required is another matter.

We have always been taught smudging poo around your backside with tissue wont keep u clean. Keep a jug near ur toilet. Fill half with warm water before doing the deed. Pour slowly over your backside while leaning forward pour from the rear. Use two sheets tO dry. There is no waste of paper and your backside will properly be cleaned. Easy and environment friendly.

I sometimes lay a square or two, of loo paper on the surface of the water in the toilet before doing the do, because it stops splashes.
