My OH's family invite us to weddings but otherwise aren't interested in us at all. We both got fed up with feeling that they only wanted us for presents and extra dosh so we decline now.

Whatever happened to "cut your coat according to your cloth"?

Shouldn't bride & grooms-to-be plan their wedding around what they can afford instead of expecting family & friends (who may also be 'hard-up' - in fact even more hard-up that the prospective married couple) to fund their day?

I would rather go to a wedding where the bride & groom had asked people to help with the catering - any chance of you doing a plate of sandwiches? could you possibly afford to bring an Iceland cheesecake? etc instead of asking for (according to the OP) about £15 a head for a set menu meal or £8 a head for a buffet.

In our circle, we could easliy afford that, but I know quite a few people who would find it a strain.

    Very selfish attitude, imho.
