    Hi,
i'm fairly new to here but I saw SOMEWHERE in the wedding forum (its a BIG forum) that someone has mentioned cheap vases. Any ideas what the website was called as I've tried everything!

p.s. It wasn't Ikea or any of the main stream websites and I think it was a guys name. Hope that helps!
  • Hi

Id like to share some advice if your planning a wedding and especially if you live in Yorkshire.

I Do magazine has a VIP membership club on its website which you can join absolutly free.

Once you are logged in you can download over £4000 worth of vouchers to save on the cost of your wedding.

Seriously there are vouchers for everything you can think off from 20% off your dress to £5 off a lipstick to £50 off car hire.

You will just have to take a look there are about 100 vouchers all free to download.

Ive saved just over £1000 so far :)

    Happy saving

    Best Regards

    Andrea

    Wow what a thread!

Im lost at where to begin. Engaged for a few years now and if we dont get married soon we never will. We have at the moment absolutely no budget whatsoever but give it a few months will have few hundred to start with. If we wait until we have the money it will never happen so i have come up with a bright idea.....i think.
My OH thinks her Mum and Dad will contribute but have yet to mention anything so without asking directly (Can't do that so we dont know and have to assume they will give us nothing) not that im expecting anything anyway. So...on to my bright idea.

Firstly register intention of the marriage etc and finalise paperwork etc and from that point priortise everything. Main priority will be to set date and book venue (Most likely registry office). Pay or put money aside for that. So at the very least we can turn up in our scruff or pjamas and get married.
Then we have a target date, i can do overtime at work or any other money comes our way we can book, arrange things as we get the money. Ie Next priority will be wedding clothes so set a budget for that and put money aside. Leaving the least important things until last. ie Transport to venue as really we can just go in anyones car.

I can get invitations and any paper items done for free, and save money on other priorities like photos. Obviously we would have to money save and if any other money contribution come our way we can get through more of the priorities and maybe be a bit more extravigant.

Wacky idea i know but i can't really say a budget of £3000 etc as i simply dont know. After Christmas i can possibly save £100 a month plus more in overtime etc. So im looking at spring 2011 to give us plenty of time in finding these bargains and getting a few bob together
    .
Anyone else done it this way and can offer any advice though i have found loads of great ideas from this thread.
  • We're doing it similar to you jonny, but luckily we have a fair bit of disposable income as no mortgage/car/kids. We sorted a date and have just been paying for things as we go along so it's not a big horrible lump sum all at once. One thing though, you can only register intent up to a year before you marry so if you're looking at 2011 you can register from 2010, which gives you a few months to start saving.

I had no idea of budget to start with (and to be honest still don't, really), just went for the best value thing I could find and kept a running total.

This forum is great for ideas, so happy planning and hope it all works out well!

  • My partner and i have decided to get married in august 2012 and we are both in the catering and hospitality bussiness and we are looking to cater for our own after ceremony reception and evening function but we are unable to find places that we can hire and cater for ourselves as i have many contacts who will cook the food and serve etc just the way we want but we are looking for a place with some history not just a village hall. MY PARTNER WANTS TO HIRE A CASTLE UMM I THINK GOOD LUCK THERE!
we have to be able to cater for about 80/90 and we are trying to do it the mse way. So if anyone out there nows a website or anything that can help it would be grately appreciated thanks happy saving
  • Hi Saxmagic, welcome to MSE:

There are a few ladies who had a hog roast which would easily cater for a wedding of any numbers, you can simply google it and perhaps come up easily with a solution for your dilemma. Veggies are easily catered for too, if you go with this option. I'm not sure whether any of the more established venues would let you self cater or bring in other people so perhaps look at venues you might not normally think of as a wedding venue. Some venues have lists of pre approved suppliers which probably come with the price tag too. Costco is fab for pre-prepared food like rice salad, pasta etc.

The other thing to do is to use Ebay and make a lot of the items yourself, Hobbycraft is very good for foam roses which look realistic and don't mention Weddings which pop a lot of money on things. Invitations and table plans, name cards are easily done but use your friends and family to help you with these things, people will feel flattered that you've asked them to help, and it will make everything seem a more family and friend focussed affair if you do.

I hope this helps and if I can think of anything else I'll pop it here for you.

This is correct but bear in mind that some councils are prepared to pencil in your date earlier as many venues get booked up about 2 years in advance! Wandsworth council took our reservation about 18 months in advance of the date and as soon as it was a year to the date, we confirmed it properly.

Just to say that you may well find this difficult as when we were looking at venues, many of them specified that we HAD to use their specific caterer. Whereabouts are you in the UK?

Have you tried ebay??..or try a wedding florist store?? good luck
  • Hello everyone! My boyfriend proposed a couple of weeks ago, so like a lot of you i've been trying to read this whole post to swot up, it's big! I think i'm doing ok so far, booked the registry office and the reception venue. There's a bit of a gap inbetween an hour or so but hoping people will pop into a pub or somthing on the way to the reception! The particular venue we picked we love, but it specifies 5 caterers one of which we must use. We have a budget of £2000 for catering to include - bbq or buffet for 50, a drink for the toast, wine on the table (not much as neither me or my fiance like wine!) limited snacks for 100 later on. Silly me for thinking a £2000 catering budget was loads, 2 caterers have already said that wouldn't be possible. Am i being unrealistic? I assumed a bbq or buffet would be cheaper! Thanks all and luck forward to posting more over the next year.

Oh and Tammy86 - I have seen some cheap vases in £land - yes they might need a bit of jazzing up but it's a good cheap start!
