Ok, so I'm starting to stress about my wedding cake. We've got ages to go yet, so no decision need to be made yet, but it all seems so expensive!

My mother keeps suggesting different places she knows that do really nice wedding cakes, but we really can't stand the thought of paying £300 plus for a cake! We're happy to spend on the things we care about, but we aren't fussed about the cake. I know we can get nice simple ones from ASDA, marks and spencer etc but we don't want a fruit cake.
We would quite like sponge, chocolate, carrot cake or a combination of all three. I know sponge won't support fruit cake - am I going to have problems with this with other cakes?
So I guess I'm left with getting a bakery to make and ice me cakes. We'll be happy with plain white icing - but my mother seems to think the bakeries will still charge me a fortune for this.
So, before I pull my hair out, any help please???

M&S do their cakes in sponge aswell and they look yummy!

They also do a chocolate iced cake cake that although it isnt iced the same as the wedding cakes, they might do it if they were asked. A friend of mine is hoping to do this. If not you could just use the wedding cakes for the display one and then buy other types of cakes for serving up for later. Were getting a plain iced tiered cake made by a friend of OHs mum for about the same as we would pay to get the M&S cakes so we were very pleased about that but we might by some carrot cake etc for serving up.

On the subject of wedding cakes, was just having a look at the waitrose site and they have some lovely cakes on there for prices that are much cheaper than all the specialist wedding cake sites that Ive seen. Might be useful for someone

    RE: Save the date magnets

Just went on to order some more magnets from VistaPrint, under 'personal' section and now they are reduced to.....

    .....wait fot it.....

FREE!!!! Cant get any more MoneySaving than that!!

I uploaded a picture black and white picture of myself (that adds £3.49 to the order) and my 'beloved' on to 2/3 of the magnet, then just added our names and the date running up the side in black curly font. Really simple, but looks really elegant.

My o/h is from overseas so I am sending them to all his family, even those we don't expect to come as its just a nice momento. Only have to pay for shipping.

Think I might use them instead of cards forwhen we have our first baby....

Ok, so now I'm starting to think too far ahead!!

FORGOT TO SAY, THINK THE NEW DEAL IS ON TIL END OF THE MONTH

How did you manage???? It shows me it is from £7.99... I was checking last week, but it was the same price. Tell us your secret!!!!

    Hi Jiblets

I did cake dec in college and imho opinion the simpler a cake the better, buy three different cakes from the supermarket like you were going to and buy a cake board at least a inch or two wider than the largest cake, stack the cakes on top of one another, this will be fine as the royal icing used is very sturdy. Go here to look at some cakes:http://www.jane-asher.co.uk/couture_display.asp?PageNum=2&category=wedding#
I chose this one as it is the simplest:
    http://www.jane-asher.co.uk/couture_images/alice.gif

The hearts are made up a metal heart shape cutter of two different sizes and colours of sugarpaste so this can be customised if you have a theme, if you can't buy the colour of sugarpaste you want at your local sugarcraft shop you will be able to buy paste colours, the SA will be able to help you with this. The hearts are attached to the cake by edible glue or icing sugar (like the stuff on fairy cakes). The beads you see around the edge of the cakes where they are stacked are iced using a number one or two tube, by tube I mean icing nozzle, these are quite cheap and you can get icing bags from most supermarkets, I know Tesco do an icing tube set with four nozzles for around a £1. One of these should do the job, if you want to buy the proper equipment you can get these in the cake decorating shop as well as disposable piping bags, you may need to snip a bit off the end to get the nozzle in. If I was close to you, I'd do it for nothing!! I think you could do this quite cheaper particularily if you bought some of the things you need online or from ebay. I will keep looking for you and hth. I hope this makes sense and if you need any advice feel free to pm me.

Good luck and congratulations on your wedding
