I've never heard of invites for a funeral! My family are the opposite and the entire family is expected to attend the service.

I'd never heard of invites to a funeral until I read it in David Lodge's 'Deaf Sentence', when he invited neighbours to his father's funeral.

Then last year, when the husband of a colleague died, I was surprised when she invited me. My response was that the whole department intended to come.

In Wales, if you know the person who died or his/her close family, you attend the funeral out of respect.

I can't imaginewhy anyone would be that concerned about what a toddler is wearing to a funeral. Surely there are more important things to be thinking about. Just dress him in sensible clothes ,dark 'jeans' sound ok to me. Childrens 'jeans' aren't the same as an adult pitching up in ripped denim are they?
At my partners uncles funeral the daughter in law (in her 40's) turned up in a short, low cut black party frock, with cleavage and tattoos on display. Everyone seemed to think that was acceptable, apart from me,who thought she looked ridiculous ! :D
  • Unfortunately I've had to attend a number of funerals over the years with small children, both very close family members where there is no one with whom to leave the child and distant relatives (both geographically and in relationship terms) where it is not possible to leave a child for such a long time. Without exception, other attendees have been understanding and pleased to see the children. They have never been bought any "funeral clothes", simply dressed in something smart that they currently owned or could wear again if it was bought new.

If you're worried about your child making a noise, you could always sit at the back or in an aisle seat so you can make an exit if need be. At the family gathering afterwards, people usually like to watch the children play, a gentle reminder on an unhappy day that life does go on, or enjoy a comforting cuddle if your child knows them well enough.

Omg some of the grammar is shocking on here.

Sorry to hear of your loss op. I agree with not buying him a formal suit, it would just be a waste of money. Just dark/neutral coloured trousers or dungarees and a top (nothing with characters on), should be just fine.

Does it really matter, why say that?

OP, has the funeral taken place yet, and how did it go? Did anyone mention your boy's clothes?

This statement coming from someone who starts off with 'omg' is quite ironic.

OP dress him in what he will feel comfortable in and something his grandad would have liked.
