How far do you commute to work?

My daughter is a care worker. She started when she was 18 and her first job was ten minutes up the road in the car. The problem was, she didn't drive. She had to get a bus into town, then wait for another bus, then walk at the other end. It took between an hour and a half and two hours, depending on the time between buses. She would then do the same in reverse.
The shift was ninety minutes long.
She had to attend every lunchtime except Saturday, plus Wednesday evening. I did take her at times, and always picked her up in the evenings because the area wasn't very nice and the buses were one an hour - leaving just before the end of her shift.
She spent more time travelling and waiting for buses than working, but I'm proud that she stuck it out. She now works for a retirement village that is ten minutes drive away (and yes, she now drives
). When she stays at her boyfriend's, she is three minutes drive from work. 0 -

We moved to the other side of town in April, and lost parking to boot. It was stressing us all out, but it's all settled down now, and it's much nicer. Does take a bit longer, and small cost to park now. And is a bit of an iffy area to walk after dark, so might need to rethink come winter. But not as bad as any of us expected...Bossymoo

7 miles, takes 15 mins in the school holidays, 20 in term time. All rural except for the last 2 minutes, great views on clear days. Only hold ups are for herds of cattle moving fields and the occasional tractor or milk wagon. Shame about the job.......................0

Soon to be commuting just over 5 miles a day, 12 minutes when not during rush hour. Luckily have flexi working hours so can try to avoid the traffic. I think this distance, I really need to begin to consider cycling/walking - keeping fit and saving money on petrol has to be a win-win, plus fortunately there are showers at work. The only thing is there's no pedestrian route the way I drive, so walking/cycling would be slightly longer.
I guess how far I *would* be willing to commute, would be restricted more by the cost of travelling, before it would the length of time/distance taken to commute. I would actually quite enjoy a one hour commute in the car with some music on, if the petrol wasn't costing me anything. Also, living not far from the border in South Wales, if I were to commute to somewhere like Bristol, I'd have the pricey bridge toll to consider. I guess there's a point where it becomes more financially sensible to move closer to the work place.Wanted a job, now have one. :beer:0 -
