Currently 8 minutes. To me it is VERY important that my work is nearby because I work late, a lot. I don't mind doing that knowing I have a short journey home but if I was working at 8pm (I start at 8am) and knowing I have an hour journey that would be too much! I like knowing I can leave and be home in my bed in 10 minutes :) I am about to relocate 500 miles for work and will not look anywhere outside 15 minutes drive.
  • It takes my fiance 1h 15min - 1h 30mins each way for work. Walking and trains add up. It has taken longer though due to cancelled trains or delayed trains. It would take at least 1hr if he had a motorbike again and would be a lot more dangerous to ride to work. It costs us a lot to pay for his train fair but he is in a job he loves and the train ride rather than a motorbike ride is more relaxing for him after a day at work.

Needs must in this climate with jobs.

I may be commuting to Brighton if I'm lucky.
  • It a 30 mile round trip for me. I car share with someone, so not too bad cost wise.

I would love to occasionally cycle in the summer, but to say the route is hilly would be putting it mildly. I have walked it home on a nice Friday afternoon.

When I was an "apprentice" it used to be a 20 min walk followed by 1hour 40 mins on buses... Each way. Basically I'd be out 7-7 Monday to Friday... and bring home £95 a week. Amazingly enough I miss that job.

Nowadays it's 10 mins on the bus, 10 mins cycle or a 40 minute walk each way. Usually the latter.

8.5 miles each way. It takes me, though (driving) between 30 and 40 minutes if I leave home after 8. I leave around 7 - 7.30 and it takes 20 - 25 mins.

Will they allow you to work flexible times? Do you need to be there for certain times (ie to cover phones or a reception desk) or could you do your work flexibly? Could you work from home? Or do a normal week over 4 days? Could you commute by public transport (ie train quicker?).
Hope you can work something out somehow.

  • My current commute is about 30 miles each way. The time it takes varies massively depending on traffic but probably averages out at 1hr 15 minutes each way (including the walk from the car-park to the office)...when I work really late and there's no traffic I can do the journey in about 50 minutes, but when the kids are at school a good day is just over an hour and bad days (ie heavy traffic, road works or an accident) can mean the journey stretching to over 2 hours each way.

Thankfully I can work from home a couple of days a week, otherwise the job would not be worth it!

15-20 min walk from home to the station, 50 mins on the train to London (although i can get a faster train if I get to the station earlier) then 10 mins walk to the office from the station the other end.
