The fact that you use a CPS calls provider (like me) should not prevent you from taking LRS - BUT others' experience on here has been that you cannot do that online, you have to do it on the phone and repeatedly insist throughout the call that you want to retain your CPS.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago )I had stated that at least 9 times during my call and received a like number of assurances CPS would not be affected - only to receive a letter from New Call Telecom saying, "Sorry you're leaving"). Needless to say, I went ape thingy and had to use my high level contact to, eventually, get things sorted.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

That wording just means that, by default, your calls will go via BT (as they probably do already). It will NOT stop you using indirect access providers or override providers like 18185.

    A word of advice pls.

I have just signed up to LRS online via my BT and must say I didn't notice the :

"By completing this order you are agreeing to switch your calls back to BT"

Currently have Evening & Wkend package for which I pay for and use 18185 for ALL calls that are NOT covered in the Eve/Wkend package. As such have no problems with meeting the '6 calls per quarter' requirement.

So am I right to assume I can still use 18185 with LRS for the majority of calls as I do at present? If this is not the case I will cancel as I'm still within the 7 working day deadline

    Thanks

I currently have BT line rental with free weekend calls only, and have never signed up to any long-term contract with BT, in spite of the tempting LRS offers.

I also have legacy Primus Carrier Pre-select service.

I read here that I can (by phone only, and with difficulty) sign up to LRS while retaining my CPS from Primus.

My question is, can I also obtain the free evening and weekend calls package from BT at no cost (said to be available only by haggling), or the BT Anytime package for £4.90, at the time I sign up?

It would seem a bit paradoxical, or at least cheeky, to insist on retaining Primus CPS while also asking for a calls package from BT, if you see what I mean.

I don't think free evenings would really get me much, other than the ability to make more frequent free "chargeable" calls to BT, to ensure I qualify for free BT Privacy (caller ID).

But I am tempted by the Anytime for £4.70 deal that I have read about, because my wife has taken to making daytime 0845 and 0870 calls, and I can't think of a better way to control those costs, except maybe by persuading her to switch to Vodafone for her mobile contract - Vodafone have a £3 a month add-on that makes 0845 and 0870 come out of inclusive minutes.

I need to analyse the average monthly spend on these calls, because I might be better just to pay them rather than accept an extra £4.70 monthly cost.

Yes, you can still use 18185 even when signed up to LRS.

    Not until Jan 2013

    BT Basic overview

From 5th January 2013, BT Basic line rental will increase by 15p a month to £4.95 a month (£14.85 a quarter including a £4.50 call allowance). UK landline calls will go up 0.3p per minute to 11p per minute and the call set up fee will increase by 0.1p to 3.2p. Calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers will continue to be free at weekends and BT Basic remains exempt from any payment processing fees.

  • I had my email advice of increase in my charges from January last week. The email was not clear exactly what was changing so I phoned BT - after holding for 40 mins the guy said my charges would actually fall (Option 3 unlimited plus anytime calls) I ended the call and went back to email to check - it definately said it was increasing, so I phoned again.. and was told that actually for me there was no change.
I emailed BT through their website and they came back confirming my package would increase. They confirmed I could cancel without penalty (an in contract) as long as within 10 calendar days from email.
Have just come off the phone - (with my MAC number) they actually said ' its not much - only £2!!) anyway have been allowed to cancel - but will have to pay termination charges and 6 months full monthly contractual amounts on next bill then request a refund.
If nothing else this has shown how completely disfunctional BT actuallty is!

Am switching to John Lewis Broadband/call (6 months free) and we'll see.

I started with BT in Nov 2010 on Broadband Option 1 (10GB limit) and weekend calls, £13/month and have Line Rental Saver. In Nov 2011 I changed to Option 2 (40GB monthly limit) + Evening and weekend calls without extending my contract, so that means I have been out of contract, paying £19.40 a month after the last price rise, since May 2012.

Silly me, I should have done this sooner, but I finally got around to ringing them today to say I'm paying too much. They immediately suggested £13.65 a month to retain me, but when I said I'd have to ponder it and mentioned 6 months free available elsewhere, etc, she "had a word with her manager" and reduced it to £10.25 a month. This is for taking a new 12 month contract. The price will go up by 40p in Jan 2013.

Since I want to retain BT for the phone in order to use 18185 for daytime calls and I am happy with the service, I think this is about the best I could do.

I would also advise others to play the retention card but then ponder their first offer.

£10.25 is the lowest price you could have achieved for that servie, so you got the best deal and played it well.

I would advise anyone to call B T for a better deal, if you are out of contract or near the end the retention guys will bite your hand off to get you on a discounted plan and staying with BT.
Crafty shifty old BT ! Just went on sign up for LRS and at checkout was presented with this message:

"By completing this order you are agreeing to switch your calls back to BT"

As I use other providers for daytime and overseas calls I stopped there, nowhere in the T&Cs does it mention this!

This is through doing it online. There are about 5 departments by phone that can do LRS for you. Sales, Retentions, Homemovers, Customer services, just give any of them a call and they will do it without removing CPS, although they will ask you.

By the way, i would say 3 out of 5 customers i speak to with CPS dont even know they have CPS....
  • Thanks to MSE email a few weeks ago I've been keeping an eye out for my notification about price hikes.

During this period my mobile provider offered me an outstanding deal for broadband and phone. All I was waiting on was BT letting me know.

Email arrived yesterday - phoned them this morning to check I could get out of a full phone and broadband package during the 10 day cancellation period - YES I CAN! RESULT!

Out of interest I asked how much it would cost to cancel at that point without the clause - £154!

So thanks to MSE I saved £154 fee and £10 per month for 12 months.

Plus I got unlimited broadband instead of capped with BT, on a shorter contract!!

That's my win of the day!

The best bit was the girl at BT could only gasp for air when I told her about the clause in my contract that she wasn't aware of. Cue evil laugh - mwah ha ha ha ha!!!
