But you are not switching, you are stopping the line (and broadband). In which case a cease charge is payable whether you are in minimum term or not. A completely different issue.

I have been told when I switch the charge will be applied to the final bill because I am still in contract. Called up to disagree with the terms and jump from BT fee free. Seems to be wrong.

If you give notice out of minimum term then no ETC applies. When does your minimum term actually end?
If you wish to reject the price increase and give notice on the basis of a detrimental change to your contract, then you cannot do so until the increase is notified.
However under either scenario a cease charge will apply, as this is in your existing contract.
You don't seem to understand the difference between an ETC and a cease charge. The only way to avoid a cease charge is to switch providers using a MAC, which is not relevant to what you want to do.

My line rental contract ends on July 2013 and had my notification a few days ago.

Now made an application to switch with primus £7.99 deal

In the end, I think its worth paying the 30 odd to get away from the BT price rises each year

But if you move having rejected the increase then it won't cost you anything?

thats what I thought but the operator had told me I will be charged in the final bill.

    Should I be charged?
  • Thanks MSE, a few of weeks I considered cancelling my BT Vision contract, we don't really watch much TV and Freeview will probably suffice. My contract is £12.50 per month with about 21 months remaining. The cancellation charge is about £4 per month with a charge for the BT Vision Box. Faced with a £200+ bill I gave up.

Coincidently the MSE email dropped into my inbox along with an explanation of how to cancel it penalty free.

When the Price rise letter arrives, you have 10 days to ring up and cancel any aspect of your BT Services. I cancelled the Vision part saving £262.50!

The person I spoke to firstly offered to reduce the monthly charge to £10 from £12.50 (always worth a punt I guess) and then told me of the penalty when I declined.

I read the section of the Email to her, she put me on hold for a few seconds then came back and confirmed that there is no penalty.

Job Done - Thanks MSE! :T
  • Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it. I don't understand though why I haven't received notice of a price increase. Has everyone else?

Can I cancel by phoning? I thought I had to write and cancel?

    Thank you again.

Nope, I've heard nothing either. Though since the increases are still several months away I don't find that particularly surprising.

At present yes, because you haven't rejected the increase.
When does your minimum term end?
