Had a look at this and list a few dvd's that I want rid of. However checking some of the prices it is regular for New and even Used items offered on Play.trade to be lot more than the actual selling price by Play.com. Is it likely that anyone would bother to buy an item through Play.com in order to get a third party to post it to them and pay extra for it whilst doing so!!
    An example is £14.99 on Play.com £24.96 on Play.trade.

Those price differences are probably down to the playtrader setting their prices before play.com discounted the item.

As yet there is no auto re-pricing tool for play and the sellers of the higher priced items have probably an inventory of thousands so are unaware that play have dropped their price.

Also it is possible that although play are offering the title at that price they are not advising that they have copies in stock for dispatch, a situation tha is very common with amazon.

    Hi Pinkgem

Well, that has got me stumped  Totally bizarre!!

There are 2 sellers listed for one item DVDukltd and AVATAR ( so you're not there), and I can't find the other item either. I know it exists 'cos DD has a copy and it's on Amazon.

I know they say you have to wait 45 minutes before your listing shows up, but they are usually instant.

I'll keep looking and trying different things to see if I can come up with anything.

A very confused little monkey FFM :)

    thanks for your help

as i said in the pm i saw your listing and mine is also supposed to be listed but isn't there

i think i am going to have to contact play about it, although i don't expect to receive a reply until after the bank holiday weekend

i suppose i could try and set another account up in the meantime

i just don't understand it, my account is active and i listed all 11 of my items 3 days ago

edit: how do i go about contacting play.com by email? have just looked through the help pages but can't find anything other than a phone number

I haven't seen an email address anywhere for queries or a contact form, but I have got through on the phone number before, though I think their call centre staff are probably going through a steep learning curve currently!

Here's the number, but I doubt you'll get much of a response until tuesday -

What exactly do Play get out of this as there are some items being sold on there by other sellers at a cheaper price than play??

Sure they get 50p then 10% of the sale but what is stopping the customer thinking "these guys are cheaper than play" then searching for their website and ordering directly from them?

Pretty similair question as to asking what amazon get out of marketplace sales.

Basically they get a commission for doing very little with no, or little, risk. There is also the argument that they are providing the customer with more choice. As well as enabling customers to buy items that they may not have in stock, though to begin with I imagine most of play's catalogue is available from Play, but this will not always be the case as they expand their catalogue and older items go out of stock. If they only sold items they had in stock they would then lose custom if people required out of stock items, and the customers may then choose to patronise another online retailer in future.

I'd expect play's catalogue to expand dramatically over the next few months as they make available through playtraders more items. Which would then expand play's potential for profit through commission, without any outlay on stock themselves.

This system works very well for amazon, and although figures are not available they do make several thousands of pounds in commission on a daily basis from marketplace sellers.
