That redirects to a trade FAQ, but has no actual sign in or 'sell your stuff' type section. Play need to sort their design out, I cannot even see obvious signs that i am signed in (altho i am) and who i am signed in as!

price shown is price delivered, they don't have P&P it's included in the price of the item. So no penny books, no complaints about postage not being enough, no bad feedback due to postal charges being inflexible. A few advantages, but I see why you say it's very different to amazon.

A point to note is that bad feedback is often based around the price charged though, play customers are used to FREE delivery, so anything over the rrp of the book can cause negative feedback. Some examples from Book Depository are:

"Price charged was more than the price tag on the book.Description not clear regarding grade level of the book.My email was completely ignored. Not happy!"

"didnt realise i was buying minature, the listing does not state this, also the price on the back of the book was 1.99 i 2.33 for it........so in reality delivery wasnt free!!!!"

"Led to believe that £2.33 was a good deal on the book I bought. Upon receiving the book it has a cover price of £1.25! I might have well just walked into town but I thought the internet provided better offers. Apparently not. Disappointing!"

"Nice book however after ordering it I found it was 5 euro cheaper in Easons and several local book shops!"

"I ordered and paid for 2 copies of the Celestine Prophecy and only received one. Also, the price on Play.com for this item (via the tradesite bookdepository.co.uk) is more than on https://www.bookdepository.co.uk itself. Why?"

"Good condition, quick delivery but charged over book price."

"Disappointed to discover that the book would have only cost £1.99 in a shop."

"Didnt state that the book was a mini book and that the RRP was only £1.50, otherwise all ok. "

Buyers are also used to very fast deliveries from Play so they have high expectations and some of the negative feedback I read also related to this.

Worth bearing this in mind when pricing and posting out.

  • We have a fork in the path here because with play.com we have a new outlet for our listings, questions are being asked and answered on 2 threads at the moment and it's just a little messy.

Do you think that it would be a good idea if rare_stuff re-writes his title for the play.com thread to show that it's the official play.com thread - something that will bring in more newbies and alert them to the fact that you can now sell on play.com, a title like.....erm.... 'selling your stuff on play.com' - that was tongue in cheek but wording like that will make people aware of Ruperts discovery.

Also I think that it would be a good idea to duplicate relevant instructional or informative posts that are currently in this thread into the play.com thread so that a new user to play.com doesn't have to rummage around the amazon thread to find out what has already been posted. This will give them enough information to get started and be fully informed, such as, for example FFMs latest post about the feedback from buyers wondering why they paid more than the RRP price for their book, also a post he wrote a few days ago about how buyers seem to get the idea that they are buying only new books, I think that this is a bit of a flaw with play.com that a new seller needs to know about, as with amazon there are very good reasons to sell there and just a few downers.

What I'm suggesting that the relevant posts could be copied and pasted over (by their writer) to the new thread rather than actually moved from here by Soo or Jo_B so that for the time being the 2 threads are entwined but eventually people will post onto either the amazon or play.com thread.

so what do you all say?

I agree lets make the Play thread 'official' I'll go and see if it lets me change the title today. That way questions can be asked specifically aimed at the 2 places as dealing with them on the same thread will be difficult as the way the 2 places work is different, so newbies might be confused when we ar discussing how postage is calculated or something.

    Great Idea AT!

Though am not sure how to edit the title of the thread, just had a look at editing my first post on it and there is no option to edit the topic :(

Maybe it would be best to start a new thread, but am a bit busy today myself, but including the bit's that you mention would be good to start the thread with, maybe if the perosn who decides to take on this task will post the first couple of times so that they have enough space to go back and add the usefull pointers to the first 2 posts like on this here thread.

There was a story about somebody, anybody, everybody and nobody, I think this is it -
There was job that everybody agreed that anybody could do,
Everybody agreed that somebody should do this,
Though in the end Nobody did.

    ;)

  • So the options are to - either

modify original thread (rare - if you go into 'advanced' you can usually edit a title) and beef it up with the posts that are here already or

start a new thread from scratch started by a willing [strike]victim[/strike] volunteer with the existing posts woven into it

    Votes?
  • If the consensus turns out to be a new thread there are 3 volunteers so far
Rupert why don't you start your own Official Selling on Play thread? Or I could start one if you don't want to?

    Yah pick me :j :j :j :j :j

Play.com reinstated me at 11.30, sold my first book at 11.33 :j

Looks like the beers are on me and Rupert

Looks like it is safe in the world of play.com, but will keep a look out.

    A happy FFM :)

    and
Someone mentioned earlier about starting a PLAY thread - I think this is a good idea so as not to clog this one up with PLAY chat. Shall I go for it???
