American Express Nectar update

Hi
Thanks for the tip on the free nectar points with American Express.
I registered last week for the card and signed all my family up too!
I just thought I would give you an update on the nectar point situation.

Having received a customer service phone call from American Express this evening, they have informed me that you will only receive the full 6000 points if the card is used before 30th March!! If you use the card after this date you will receive 2000 from Amex for opening the account and 2000 from nectar for using the card. The allocation of the final 2000 is if you use the card before 30th March. I hope I have told you all enough times that you must use the card before 30th March to receive the final 2000 points

I have received my pin number and can only hope that the card comes in time for me to buy that Mars Bar!!!
Cheers

Well that's annoying, I didn't see that in the T&Cs. I applied week before last but have not heard anything. Hope I can avoid this phone call thing, I just want the card! Will check about this use card before 30 March, no one said before!
  • i only applied for this to get the 6000 nectar points, its the first credit card i've ever had. i got my PIN number last week, it was sent out on 23rd March but the card hasn't arrived yet, if i'm not going to get the points will i be able to cancel the card?

I am really ticked to hear the 6000 points are reduced to 4000 points after the end of march. I applied for my card before the end of march, but it only arrived today. I did contact American express to ask for my 6000 points, but they have asked me to contact the nectar helpline, which is now closed. Will contact them in the morning, but it sounds like i have lost 2000 points, dam!! , or should i look at aquiring 4000 points (twenty pounds)!!
Trinidad - I have a number of needs. Don't shoot me down if i get something wrong!!

Hmmph, I don't recall seeing that deadline either and I've only just noticed this post! There's nothing about it in the paperwork that came with the card and the current offer on Martin's article is for 3000 points although it still says it expires 31st March?

The Nectar site's down for maintenance, so I can't check what T&Cs they have on the current offer. I knew I should've saved the web page before I applied for it...

I read the terms and conditions carefully and am confident that they quoted nothing of the sort! It effectively said 'Apply before end of March to earn 6000 points'. 2000 paid upon successful application. 4000 paid on first usage. Nothing was stated that I saw saying that you'd get less under any circumstances.

I plan to argue the toss if they try it on with me!

On the off-chance, did anybody happen to save their T&Cs from the Amex/Nectar sites when they signed up for this card in March?

There's certainly no mention on the Nectar site now about there being a deadline for using the card to get the 4000 extra points. After clicking the link to the Amex site just now, at the bottom of that page it says:
    1. If approved for the Nectar Credit Card before 31 December 2007 you will receive 1,000 Nectar bonus points when the Card is used for the first time.

There's also no mention of an initial spend deadline on the terms and conditions page linked on the Amex site during the sign-up process:
    17. NECTAR POINTS

17.1 Nectar points are issued in connection with the Nectar Loyalty Programme pursuant to an agreement between us and Loyalty Management UK Limited and are subject to Nectar collector rules.

17.2 You will earn points for transactions (other than cash withdrawals) charged and billed to your account at a minimum rate of 1 point per £1 spent.

17.3 Points will not be earned in respect of any Cash Withdrawal, Balance Transfer, American Express Travellers Cheque purchases, Foreign Exchange Transactions or any interest or fees, or any other non-purchase related amount,.

17.4 Points will accrue in respect of spending in each month provided your account is not more than 60 days overdue for payment. Points will not accrue in respect of amounts which are subsequently recredited to your Account because of refunds.

Of course, this is only what's up there now, not what was there before. I've already got the 2000 sign-up points, but haven't actually used the card yet (I keep leaving it at home and forgetting ). I'm definitely going to query it if my bonus points don't come through.

NB - the T&Cs on the Nectar site say that:
Nectar points are awarded by Nectar and not the retailer so please contact us if you believe points have been incorrectly awarded to your account.

so if you have a query about your points from this offer you need to get in touch with Nectar not Amex.
  • I actually printed the T&Cs when I applied as I wanted something in writing as backup if something went wrong. I've got them in front of me and what they actually say is:

"If approved for the Nectar credit card and you make your application through Nectar eStores by 31st March 2007 you will receive 2000 base points from American Express when the card is used for the first time plus an additional 4000 Nectar bonus points from Nectar (these will be awarded separately to your account by 31st May 2007). "

There is no mention of the actual spending having to be before 31st March.

Power to the punters! ;)

I thought I would share the details of a conversation I had earlier today with an American Express representative on this subject. I had been expecting 6000 Nectar points in line with the original offer, but when I checked my Nectar account online, only 3000 points had appeared. I checked the original offer on this website, which despite stating 15 pounds inside the article, did say 30 pounds on the front blurb:

"URGENT LOOPHOLE: Free £30 Nectar points during March Updated Article
grab an American Express 'Nectar' credit card in March and you earn 6,000 Nectar points (worth £30) when you spend on it"

At first the advisor told me I would only be eligible for 1000 points (even though I'd already been credited with 3000 points). I insisted that when I first applied online the offer was for 6000 points, so she went away and checked with the 'new accounts' department who affirmed that I should have got 2000 when the card was first used and another 4000 after the first billing period.

However, I had been credited with 2000 points but then only a further 1000. She then said I would get the rest of the points in the next billing period. I then questioned this point as who would know to action these further points next month since my online account suggested both Nectar and Am Express had given their respective points? The advisor then went away again and said she would action the remaining 3000 by a manual update today. :j Debenhams here we come!

If anyone else should find themselves short-changed, a little perseverance is recommended. ;) I may take screen prints with future offers as her first point was that their website says 1000 points (which it does now).
