I'm considering the fasting plan of eating within 8 hours and fasting for 16.
I don't think I can do it 100% because I often need pain medication (which requires food) late evening, but I am willing to have a go.

I already often go all day without eating (my only control over a gastro problem is to not eat unless I am home for the day, won't go into details) so I don't think it would be a big stretch for me.

I do seem to get really hungry though so not sure how I will cope. But something needs to be done about my weight and this seems something fairly simple to try.

Don't think I could handle the 5:2, 500 calories is very little food.

oh heck, if you already have a gastro problem, then you shouldn't try anything like this without medical supervision, I wouldn't have thought.

You say 500 calories is very little food, but I have easily stuck to it today.

    3 cups of tea (with milk & sugar)about 40 cals each = 120
    Poached egg (85 cals )
on toast no butter (95 cals )
    and a banana 150 cals
    = a total of 450

The single banana is pretty calorie heavy (but it's my favourite fruit), I could have had 3 apples, or of course some salady type foods instead to bulk it out. Similarly, the cups of tea suit me spread thru the day, but other people may prefer to take those calories as solid food instead.

Obviously, I would feel pretty awful if that was my diet every day, but I don't feel particularly deprived having that just 2 days per week.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

EDIT: I made a really long post about why I felt able to do the fast alone and not under medical supervision. But I don't think anyone would be interested :o

In a snapshot, it's an extension of what I do already, I know how my illness affects me and Im very sensible- when for example I was given a steroid trial I did not start when I was given them but later in the week when I knew someone would be home with me for the next 3 days in case of a bad reaction.

People with digestive ailments usually lose weight, I haven't but have put it on, and nothing is wrong in terms of thyroid, malnutrition etc (regular blood tests).

When I flare I wouldn't fast but eat as my body directed me (I tend to need to eat alot for a few days after as soon as it will stay in, sometimes naturally and sometimes helped with meds) and only resume when I was sure I had recovered.

I know having increased day-to-day symptoms (not a flare) can be triggered by eating when too empty, so rather than jumping in with a huge lunch I will have a few crackers first, as I sometimes do now already.

If I feel at any point it is too much for me I will stop immediately. But I need to lose weight and am confident of my judgement in trying this one alone.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I love the idea of this, its not so different from what i have done for years but.....i have gaipned weight. I cannot access iplayer but i plan to watch this when i can and see what i am doing wrong. I have decreased thyroid function and it might be that fasting has a negative impact on my 'metabolism' rate. But doing what i call 'calorie hoarding' is the only way i can see to enjoy normal social eating.

So another 2lb down this morning, but I did feel very low when I woke up, not hungry though just thoroughly p****d off, I decided to eat before lunch time and I feel considerably better, I had a plate of chicken and coleslaw, which means I am 6.5 lbs down in total so far and the first week is up on monday morning.

    Think i'll give this a shot :)

Bah and to think of all those people who have told me off for fasting previously! :rotfl:

Yes and I would of been one of those people:o when I heard a certain celeb only ate once every other day I was appalled and ranted about her being a bad role model and looking too skinny (she did but not now), education is certainly a wonderful thing, knowledge is power and all that *roll eyes*, good luck with the new diet:)

Oooh, thanks, didn't think of that. Have added :D

    Great blog, Just a Girl!

My OH and I have just tried the alternate day fast, with a meal late afternoon, and I can't believe how not hard it is! I've not felt hungry at all, as I've been drinking a lot of water (also my normal coffee and green tea). It's really almost unbelievable, as until very recently I was binging like mad, and had put on 20 kg in less than a year.

Still, we realised it would be really difficult, for both of us, to fast on a weekend day, so we modified it into a 4:3 programme - fasting on Mon/Wed/Fri, and normal eating on the other days.

Another bonus I wasn't anticipating - we have more time in the evening when fasting! No prep/cooking for me, nor clearing for him... It's freeing! :D

Thank you :D I started blogging back in 2008 when I wanted to lose weight. I often read back over the very start and it always surprises me at how much I've changed my attitude towards food.

Back then I was eating every couple of hours, was pretty much fat phobic and doing loads of cardio.

Now I fast for a minimum of 16 hours every day, eat a high fat, low carb diet, do no cardio and lift some pretty heavy weights. Oh, and I'm about 3 and a half stone lighter as a result :D

You're getting very little nutrition for those calories though. The banana is mainly sugar, the toast is mainly sugar, the tea is mainly sugar...

You might want to read my post from this thread which explains the reason for the weight loss you're experiencing ;)

But that is only one day, in the first week before I had planned out my shopping. As I said anyone could substitute more veg/salad, as we will in future weeks.

Anyway, I get plenty of good nutrition over the rest of the days.
