I can't post links just yet as a newbie but some great resources:

    leangains.com
    precisionnutrition.com/intermittent-fasting/summary

Can you remind me of what your normal diet is? I'm just wondering if it would work the same way for me. I'm low carb, high fat.

Are you allowed to have a cup of tea within the fasting hours though?

I.e say I've fasted from 8pm and I am not going to eat until 12pm the next day, can I have a cup of tea at 7am when I get up?

You need to drink during the fasting hours but, obviously, not anything sugary. Black tea, herbal teas, coffee or water are okay.

If you're struggling with not eating anything for so long, pure fat doesn't seem to disrupt the beneficial effects so you could have a dollop of cream or coconut fat in your coffee. If you're doing the WOE to lose weight, stick to plain drinks.

Well I for one spent some time reading round.

    BUT

Instead of being negative and p£ssing on people's efforts to get healthier, would you like to give us the benefit of your VAST expertise, and post links to research sources please? Thank you

I'm not p!ssing on people's efforts to get healthier, quite the reverse! I'm concerned there might be some people jumping on the bandwagon without understanding what they're actually doing which could have adverse effects on their health!

I can't advise individuals on a forum as I'd have to give them a full health check first which is neither practical nor allowed within the rules of the forum. I can only advise that people do some proper research and/or speak to a nutritionist for proper advice first. And posting links to research papers is of very little use to those who won't understand them ;)

Sure. I'm grain free, high fat, low carb.

    I eat the following foods:

    Meat:
Beef (steak, mince), lamb (steak, mince, chops), pork (chops, good quality, outdoor reared bacon, sausages (must be gluten free with a high meat %), chicken (whole chickens with skin, legs), wild salmon, occasional prawns.

    Dairy:
Butter, double cream, unhomogenised full fat Jersey milk, aged cheese, Greek yoghurt

    Fats:
Eggs, coconut oil, beef dripping, olive oil, coconut, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts

    Starch:
Sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots, parnsips, bananas

    Fruit & veg:
Strawberries, blueberries, clementines, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, sprouts, green beans, spinach, lettuce, peppers, occasional tomatoes

These are the foods I eat on a day to day basis. Occasionally, I will indulge in some good quality ice cream or dark chocolate or a glass of red wine.

On special occasions (such as mine or my boyfriend's birthday) I will make gluten free treats but they are limited as I've been mostly grain free for almost two years.

Thanks JAG, that's helpful and I think mostly the same as what I am on at the moment (the Harcombe Diet). Infact, I think it was a link from that website that led me to your blog?

Is this a complete list or just an example of what you eat? There's a severe lack of fish if so, and limited variety of nuts. I see no seeds or beneficial oils so where do you get your Omega 3's from? This diet appears to be quite restrictive and I'd be worried that you're not getting all the nutrients you need from it :o

Um, did you not see coconut oil and olive oil? They are the only two beneficial oils really. I don't consume seeds (birds eat seeds) or other nuts apart from the ones listed due to their high PUFA content and I most certainly don't consume any "vegetable" or seed oils as they are already rancid by the time they get to the shelf of the supermarket.

I do eat fish, I eat salmon which supplies my omega 3. I don't need to overdose on omega 3 like most people as I limit my intake of omega 6 so my ratio of 3:6 is perfectly fine.

The diet is absolutely not restrictive - what nutrients am I missing out on?

If that works for you, then great! I prefer much more variety in my diet and if that means increasing my intake of oily fish, which I eat in one form of another almost daily anyway so I can eat a wider variety of nuts which also contain other vital nutrients. As far as eating seeds are concerned, they are not restricted just to birds!! :rotfl:
