  • If that works for you, then great! I prefer much more variety in my diet and if that means increasing my intake of oily fish, which I eat in one form of another almost daily anyway so I can eat a wider variety of nuts which also contain other vital nutrients. As far as eating seeds are concerned, they are not restricted just to birds!! :rotfl:

    I'm curious to know what "vital nutrients" are contained in nuts that I cannot obtain from other foods?
  • I shall follow this thread with interest. I had two medically imposed restricted calorie days plus a 24hrs fluid only fast last week so decided having been through that I might as well do the alternate day fast...so am now on 2nd 600 cal fast day. I have decided on 600 cals by choosing to use the 20% of normal calorie consumption formula..and to eat healthily on the non fast days. After a week or two I aim to change to 5:2.
    My GP is thrilled...he says that as I am morbidly obese if I was compelled to have bypass surgery I would be on 600 cals 7:7..so 5:2 or even 3:4 cannot do anything but be of benefit to my long term health. He is also of the opinion that you should choose the pattern that you find easiest. Good Luck to those giving it a go!!:T

    Hi, can I ask where you get the idea that a gastric bypass patient would be on a daily intake of just 600 calories? Perhaps they will be restricted to this during the pre-op diet whereby they have to deplete their glycogen levels to shrink the liver but certainly not long term, it's simply not sustainable. Most bariatric patients will be on a minimum of 1200 calories a day and if they're not, they should be!

  • My family and I have just watched this programme and are very keen to try the 5/2 diet; my OH and I are in our early fifties and both overweight; he has been told by our GP that he needs to lose weight or risk diabetes, and I take pills for high blood pressure. As far as I can see, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain by taking up the 5/2 diet. We have decided to make the fasting days the weekends and will start next week. I have never felt so excited about the prospect of a diet as I do about this... the weight loss would be a fabulous benefit too, but the part I am almost looking forward to most is going to my GP and having her tell me 'you don't need the blood pressure pills anymore'... my sister and I had already decided to join our local gym in an effort to do something about our weight and general health but haven't yet started due to my sister breaking her ankle just days before our first session; we agreed to do it together, so it will be interesting to see how things progress if I am on 5/2 and she isn't... I'll report back in a few week's time and hopefully will have good news!

  • Just thought I'd share some progress pictures here with anyone thinking of giving IF a try. I switched to a grain free diet 18 months ago and two weeks later started to practice daily intermittent fasting.

    My results have been amazing :)

    I eat a diet considered restrictive or unhealthy by many but many ailments have cleared up since I started to eat this way:

    bloating, constipation, gas and other IBS symptoms
    acid indigestion
    bleeding gums
    lethargy
    aching joints
    mid afternoon slump
    insomnia

    My nails have also got stronger, my hair shines and my skin is radiant :)

    The biggest health benefit I got from fasting was that it has helped me to stop my binge eating disorder and I've been binge free for almost 18 months now :)

    Thanks for posting those pictures. You look lovely.

    I also suffer from many of those symptoms that you list and if I manage to clear them or even just reduce their severity I will be extremely pleased. Of course I also want to lose some weight too but I am really interested in the health benefits.

    I started the 5:2 regime yesterday. I found it very easy - no negative side effects whatsoever. Today I have just eaten healthily. I will have another fast day on Tuesday.

    Just popped myself on the scales. I fasted on Friday - around 600 cals and ate normally yesterday and I've lost 2lbs.

    Just a Girl - I am definitely going to try and give up grains - IBS is not pleasant and I've suffered quite badly this week.

    As a matter of interest have you given up on all grains ie oatmeal, rice etc. I know wheat is my main culprit. I suppose it's just trial and error really. I definitely don't want another week like the one I've just been through that's for sure.

    im trying this too , started today , i have a terrible headache already , but i am suffering with a cold so maybe the headache stems from there.

    I already eat low carb ( with regular hiccups into high carb :o) and have tried the 16:8 IF successfully too.

    I have decided to have 500cals at lunchtime as we are going out for lunch.

    Well done :) The important thing to remember is that any weight loss so early in is most likely water, but water or not, 2lb off is a good boost and motivation enough to keep on going!

    IBS is really unpleasant. I was resigned to the fact that I was destined to follow in my mum's footsteps and suffer. I was constantly bloated, gassy, suffering constipation alternating with diarrhoea - it was a nightmare. I was a porridge addict (as my older entries on the blog will prove - I sometimes ate it for all three meals!) but within an hour of eating it, I'd feel like I had a brick in my stomach and it would bloat up to twice its size and stay like that for the rest of the day. The only time my stomach was normal was first thing when I woke up.

    Last March I gave up all grains for a 30 day blog challenge. However, the benefits were so amazing that I decided to stick with it. 18 months later, I'm still grain free. Not saying there haven't been occasions where I've had grains, there are always going to be circumstances where either choice dictates whether I eat them or if I just really fancy something. I try to stay away from gluten grains all the time because I've noticed a pattern in the last ten months that when I eat them, it's followed by severe symptoms (rectal bleeding, mucus, chronic diarrhoea, facial rashes and mouth ulcers) so wheat & other gluten grains are banned.

    If I had to guess, I'd say there have been ten or so occasions in the time I've gone grain free that I've indulged in grains and every time, my symptoms have returned.

    In fact, it was my boyfriend's birthday a few weeks ago and I made him some gluten free treats. Within two days, IBS was back with a vengeance and my joints were unbelievably sore and aching. Since the grains have gone again, symptoms have disappeared.

    So, whilst many people believe I'm here to preach a paleo diet ;) I'm really not. Once upon a time I labelled myself paleo or primal but nowadays, if I had to label myself, I'd simply call myself grain free or following a toxin-free diet :)
