im on day 2 of my 5:2 IF, feel much better today, headache has almost gone .

ate at 2pm yesterday ( at a pub) and had steak and chips with mushy peas :j it was lovely and i felt really hungry . but thankfully didnt feel any hunger at all for the rest of the evening , i just had 1 glass of water .
was a little hungry this morning but it soon passed, i have been at work this morning so have had 3 cups of tea with a spot of milk.
just had a chicken salad with coleslaw , strawberries and cream
hoping i wont feel hungry tonight .
  • Just about to start on this, planning to use the 5:2 route. Does anyone know, would fruit tea (twinnings) be OK for the fasting days? calculates to less than 10 calories per cup. (dont think i can drink tea or coffee without milk and sugar)

You did your two fasting days together then? Is that recommended? I would have been worried eating out when your calorie intake is so restricted.

  • Sorry, but I completely disagree with you. And I do have significant knowledge and experience in this area. Post-op, once a patient is past the liquid and pureed phase of their diet (6-8 weeks) they should be taking in 1200 calories a day minimum and this is easily achievable if they follow the proper protocols of diet. To survive on just 600 calories per day is neither sustainable nor healthy long term and especially in light of the fact they have a reduced capacity to absorb the nutrients from the food they eat.

All I can say and it will be the last I say on this subject is that in my 35yrs involvement with nutrition I have enough experience to know that what people should be doing & what they are doing or ABLE to do in real life is very different.
It is perfectly possible (although not always advisable) to sustain a diet of even less than 600 cals . My first experiences of hospital treatment for Obese patients (long before Bariatric Surgery) was an enforced 200 calorie diet often for at least a month at a time...medically they always left hospital healthier than they arrived.
Things have of course moved on & changed over the years, however 600 calories is still widely believed to be a 'base rate' which is enough to prevent actual starvation. I am not talking the hyped up 'starvation mode' here but the level where an individual of normal or less weight will not sustain organ failure.
I can only go by my own experience & training and research, you must by yours...however I should point out that I did not ask for your advice and I was not giving anyone any advice in the post that you saw fit to criticise and was actually quoting my GP!!
    :T2013...nothing..still hoping though!!

I have started the 16/24 and will let everyone know how it goes.

It's worth remembering here, that different people feel different levels of hunger, there are different rates of metabolism. Some of us can be satisfied on a big lunch and a glass of water for dinner- but for some of us the hunger would be really bad and we'd need to eat!

    Cool! thanks

Lets hope this works, lost just under 4 stone a couple of years ago by restricting to 2000 cals for 5 months, along with some weight training. But got bored, wobbled a bit, then fell off the wagon and put it all back on :-(
  • I am astonished! Knowing nothing about money saving, but always ready to learn, I stumbled on this site purely from a very new interest in IF. Is there a proven link between money saving interest and health? It seems that the majority of subscribers to this subject here are themselves more unhealthy than they deserve to be. Having watched the Horizon programme both my wife and I decided to give it a go. We consider ourselves to be jolly well at 77 and 79 respectively. Beloved does have peripheral neuropathy and I enjoy Parkinson's disease but we don't allow it to interfere unduly with our customary enjoyment of life. Ain't it wonderful? Today we embark upon IF. A new challenge beckons. :j Now we shall have to explore money-saving too. Deep joy!

You know. I think I stumbled across your blog recently when looking up health and fitness blogs in general. Do you follow Paleo?

I started my own health and fitness journey about 2 months ago, and also started a blog (though I haven't shared it with everyone yet - too scared right now! lol) so I could track my own progress and have something to refer back to.

I didn't see this programe, but will check it out on youtube tonight as, incidentally, after a day of eating high protein, natural fats, low carb healthy foods on Friday, I wasn't hungry between 9pm that night and 12pm the next day. Even after having something small to eat at 12pm, I wasn't hungry again until 10pm in the evening! That's never happened before! lol

I started off paleo last March, yeah :) still grain free all these months later. Best thing I ever did for my health along with daily fasting. Speaking of which, I'm 21 hours into a fast and feeling fantastic :D
