  • I,too am interested in the fasting after having watched the programme. Although I would love to loose a bit of weight, its mainly the health benefits I`m interested in.. there`s a history of heart disease in my family and I know I could do better at looking after my health.

Trouble is I can`t stop eating :rotfl: I`m a terrible craver and rarely eat for hunger anymore, I just like stuff and so I want it. Need practice this self control stuff I keep reading about :(

I fasted for the first time today, I decided to split my calorie allowance into two as I don`t think I could do just one meal a day - so I had small cereal bowl at about 10am and two boiled eggs with salad at about 6pm. It is now after 8pm and I haven`t even thought about snacks so I`m going to stick it out although I left a bit of allowance in case I get the munchies.

I don`t know if it`s just beginners luck but I really don`t feel hungry (probably due to a stomach full of water - drank lots more than my usual I found) :T

I plan on doing Friday and Monday as my fast days as we always have company at the weekends and end up overeating so it`ll be a nice prelude/postlude to it.

Really excited about this and will be following the thread with great interest ! Happy fasting everyone :j

I've been doing Atkins for years and eating carbs play havoc with my body if I'd been low carb for a few days/weeks. I'm surprised that 2 days of fasting (high potein low carb low calorie) mixed with normal eating does anything at all. I am curious but I suppose our bodies are all different and react in different ways. Eating less is never a bad thing. Good luck everybody!

It might take some willpower to stop initially, but you may well find that your carb cravings are a vicious cycle or chicken/egg senario.... and once you cut the loop, the craving may mysteriously vanish ;) same can be said for most sugary, carby things in my experience.

I used to absolutely crave a cinnamon & raisin bagel for breakfast, but once I got over the first few days (I switched to eggs last Nov) I haven't had a single bagel since, nor missed them. Honestly!!

My OH switched to protein + salads for lunch in Jan and he too says he can last until dinner without snacking now, which he could never do when he had a sarnie, jacket potato or pasta etc. he was all over a mid afternoon choccie bar or bag of crisps like a rash :)

Mind over matter to start with mary2012... then you may well be surprised that your body follows suit & it is easier than you thought! Good luck!
  • I can't help thinking that the magic behind this diet is that, at the end of the week, you have just eaten less than you would normally.

But if you`re an over-eater (and most of us will be) even this will have great impact on your body.

There used to be a time when food was fuel and the lack of choice and supply made it difficult to over indulge. I have not lived in such times, mind, but am inspired but how the attitude towards food used to be so different and how simple choice and availability have changed everything so dramatically.

People still starve around the globe ! Nevermind three meals plus snacks, people actually literally go unfed for days because they have no other choice.

Also, for the people that are approaching this from a diet point of view, most will find that abstaining for two days will be highly more doable than constantly dieting and feeling denied and starved.

Maybe. My scepticism stems from the fact that I generally eat once a day with at least 20 hours between meals. I still managed to get fat.

What do you have to drink during the day?

How much do you eat in your one meal?

Have you had a health check for things like thyroid function?

I'm considering the fasting plan of eating within 8 hours and fasting for 16.
I don't think I can do it 100% because I often need pain medication (which requires food) late evening, but I am willing to have a go.

I already often go all day without eating (my only control over a gastro problem is to not eat unless I am home for the day, won't go into details) so I don't think it would be a big stretch for me.

I do seem to get really hungry though so not sure how I will cope. But something needs to be done about my weight and this seems something fairly simple to try.

Don't think I could handle the 5:2, 500 calories is very little food.

Too much! Recently, to celebrate my 50th birthday, I was treated to a (rather comprehensive) health check by my doctor. I don't have a thyroid problem.

However, my portliness was in the past. I lost the weight by adopting a low(er) carb diet. My weight is now stable. Generally, except at weekends, I still only eat once a day though. Old habits die hard.
