    As long as you want.

Some people use it as a regular way of eating, rather than a weight-loss diet. Some use the method to lose weight.

So how do you determine whether you lose 4.5 pounds in a week or just stay at a stable weight?

Monitor your weight? If you're losing too much, you could eat more when you're eating, try reducing the fasting hours, only fast every other week ....

    Do what suits you.

I can't help thinking that the magic behind this diet is that, at the end of the week, you have just eaten less than you would normally.

That's part of it but the fasting part has measurable effects on the body and seems to change the way the body handles the food you do then eat.

The weight loss is just a by-product (and a good one, in my opinon) of this way of eating. The programme showed that there were many health benefits brought on by the body having to use its reserves and these were what the scientists were studying. Even if you have a lower calorie intake over the course of the week, the studies have shown that you will not get the health benefits and although I'm pleased with the weight loss side of things, it's the health benefits that win! There is a lot of research about it on the net.
  • Hi.
I am also interested in doing the 5:2 diet mainly for weight loss.
According to the BBC article (bbc.co.uk/news/health-19112549) I can:-

    - split my calories on fasting days (lunch and dinner)
    - eat whatever i want on fast days (limited to 600cals)
    - Fasting days do not have to be concurrent

The two days at 600 calories sounds more doable to me than any diet plan.

Heres the link to the Iplayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01lxyzc/Horizon_20122013_Eat_Fast_and_Live_Longer/

I also thought the Men Who Made Us Fat TV series on a few months ago was very interesting too, anyone catch that?

I'm really interested int his too - think i will try in a couple of weeks when I don't have the kids under my feet as am worried about feeling faint etc.

IIRC he had eggs and ham for breakfast then fish and veg for dinner on his fast days - so high protein and low carb. if it goes ok and feels manageable I'll try and incorporate into my week
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Don't forget the fat. It's important to forget the low-fat propaganda if you're going low carb.
