I often wonder when people are doing this 5:2 way of living to improve their health that they then turn to "ready meals" and convenience foods on their fast days? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Maybe not but to be fair I'd say most are doing it primarily to lose weight first and any health benefits are a bonus. It's certainly that way with me.

Besides, the odd ready meal now and again doesn't do any harm. And I don't know about anyone else but I only have them when I absolutely cannot be bothered to make something from scratch, which isn't often. Sometimes I'm absolutely knackered from work, I then go for a run, have a shower and sometimes it leaves me little time for anything else.

I imagine in a perfect world we'd always have the time and the will to make our own meals from scratch and they'd be healthy for us but we sure don't live in a perfect world.

I've noticed a few comments and opinions from you about 5:2 and I often wonder if you have followed this plan and had success yourself ?

If so, I'd really like to hear how much weight you managed to lose and how long it took you ?

If not, I wonder why you would keep visiting this thread & making negative comments, towards those who are actually taking positive action to improve their health and lives ?

Three fast days and a 3lb loss for me :)

I'm really pleased with that & I had a ready-made lentil cottage pie for supper on my last fast day.

My daughter was out and I didn't feel well, or much like cooking so it was an easy 350 calories in a hot meal.

Not that I think I should have to justify my food choices to anyone.

Lots of things don't make sense to me, but for the most part I don't think it's my business to make comment unless asked for my opinion or advice.

    Well done Arrietty. :)

Because some people may have health problems, physical or mental, that leave them with no other reasonable option some days. It's that, or they'd just eat whatever else was around and needed the least effort, which is not always going to be healthy.

Plus, losing weight and having the odd ready meal is probably healthier than staying the weight they are. Crazy thought.

1lb loss for me this week, hoping for better next week as I'll increase my exercise, and not over indulge quite so much. Still a loss is a loss!

I would like to speak up for Chameleon, yes she does sometimes make comments that can be contentious to some people, but her input is generally good. Are we all special little snowflakes that can't take a bit of differing opinion or any question?
And I do practice 5:2 and I also use veggie stock that has MSG in it as a drink on fast days (5 to 7 calories a cup), so I am hardly averse to a bit of processed junk food in moderation.

    Fasting today.

I'm very tempted to give 5:2 a go. I will bookmark this thread and read through the hundreds of pages later! I am veggie so if anyone has any links to veggie food for fast days I'd really appreciate them.

I'm doing this and am vegetarian. Veggies/lentils are pretty good for filling you up, and if you eat things like quorn it can be quite low calorie too.

Today is a fast day for me. I have a quorn chilli with salad for lunch and then omelette for dinner.
  • I agree Chameleon is generally quite helpful but definitely some posts have come across a bit preachy which most people do not appreciate. There's a way to have an opinion without making it sound like only yours is the correct one...!

Fasting day for me too. Went a bit crazy over the weekend celebrating getting to target so now that's out of my system I'm getting back to normal for the next week until I go to NYC. Will no doubt do a bit of damage over there but at least I know how easy it is to get it back off!

  • I eat quite a lot of ready meals, always have done, always will. I don't think that anyone on this thread will be persuading or encouraging me to do otherwise.

And nobody need to justify his or her eating habits whatsoever on this thread. I just hope that criticisms don't put people off posting.

As for today, I wanted it to be a fast day, and cooked up chicken with tarragon, lemon, and crème fraiche. First of all, I cooked up all the chicken (it needed cooking), so made up 3 portions - all have now been eaten, and I'm about to get the crème fraiche pot and perhaps stick some fruit in it to finish that up.

And thereby lies my problem. If I eat a ready meal, that's it done and dusted, and I know how many calories I've consumed. But if there are tempting things in the fridge, the fast day goes out the window.

My very thin sister says that she never buys things that are bad for her, ie crisps, biscuits, milk and butter even, but if you are trying a new recipe sometimes you have to buy too much of something delicious.
