Generally speaking, diets are good for you, because they contain food and drink - things essential to keep us humans alive.

Bad or unhealthy diets are not good for you;)

Yes, do come here for support. Ignore the odd person who is anti for some bizarre reason. Michael Mosley is still looking wonderful on the 5:2 (or 6:1 maintenance).

What you are doing is great, and congratulations to you. The good thing about this diet is it's flexibility, (and how cheap it is), so I also do 4:3 on occasion to get back (if I've been on holiday, had visitors, etc). I'll be on 5:2 next week. I also do a combination of fresh foods and ready meals on fast days. The essence of the diet is 500 calories, but, Lordy, rather do 600 until you feel ready to do the 500 (I bet it's sooner rather than later, you soon get into it).

But I do think you should eat normally on certain non-fast days to avoid the idea that your body goes into starvation mode, and also to keep you on the diet. Michael Moseley's website gives you an idea of how many calories you should be having a day.

    http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/

PS - if people think this is a new diet, my very thin sister was doing this in the 60's - except she didn't eat a thing on her fast day. So nothing new about it. She's one of the healthiest people I know, she's 77 and looks incredible.

Ooh thanks, missed that! Yep, I've basically been cutting back bit by bit, not down by several hundred each normal day :) Over the last couple of months, hasn't made a huge difference to my weight.

Diets being bad depends - if you change your views on food, change your lifestyle (add exercise if possible) and it's a sustainable diet that doesn't put you very low on calories every day, then it's a healthy diet. The 5:2 counts as this.

The problem with diets are fad diets, where you eat 500 calories a day for a few weeks, then yoyo back up, with a worse for wear metabolism, or follow a calorie controlled diet, but the minute you hit a healthy weight you go back to old patterns. Yes, you could do the 2nd on this, but like any healthy diet you have to think about why you were overweight to begin with and change your thinking.

For a lot of people this seems more sustainable than cutting 500-1000 calories each day for years (1-2lb a week loss at that), because for most people it's hard and sets them up to fail. The main part of any diet is learning portion control for the future, really - if you don't it won't work long term, simple as that.

I am intrigued by this enormously....

Is it really as simple as only consuming 500cals 2 days out of 7. Then eat healthily on the remaining 5?

There must be some sort of catch...

Just bought the book on amazon by mosely and eargerly awaiting its arrival.

    Hello,

well done to everyone who has reached target or got a step closer :T

I missed my check-in last week and what with 2 more family birthdays & meals and having to do extra hours at work as 2 people off ... I've discovered that :
    1) I am a stress eater (failed at both fast days last week) and
    2) I've managed to regain the 3lbs I had lost

    hmmmmm

Fortunately, there are no further family or foodie celebrations planned (apart from the mid-winter one) so I have a clear run of 12 weeks and 24 fast days to the end of the year of me and can focus on myself for a while :D

All the birthday cake has gone now and I'm looking forward to a fast day tomorrow.

Probably need to check in more regularly too !
    SAVER o:)

There is no catch at all. You eat 500 cals if you are female, 600 if male on two non consecutive days a week. You can eat healthily on the remaining 5 if you want but you don't have to be really strict with yourself because you already have the calorie deficit on the other 2 days. That there are no restrictions apart from the fast days is what makes the diet so sustainable.

Pink petal, you are the same size as me 8-10 on top, 12 on the bottom. I find myself holding up size 8-10 tops in shops and thinking 'am I really that small?' then picking up size 14 trousers and being surprised when I hold them up against myself that they are massively large.

Rosyq = well done on getting to where you are. Sounds like you are the ideal size and the makeover will do the trick. I wish my husband would say I had taken it too far.

I am going to try zumba tomorrow to see if I enjoy it. I don't do any exercise and although I don't need to lose weight any more I would like to raise my fitness levels.

So I found some of those noodles today. Just made a veggie red Thai curry for tomorrow's fast day with them and all in at 300 calories. I'm glad you warned me about the smell!!

So I'm guessing the hard bit is the 500-600 cal fast days, but surely it isn't that difficult....is it?
