5:2 diet

Hi littlerat, I was also morbidly obese when I started this diet in April, my BMI has come down 9 points. I fast 3 days not 2 though. This is the easiest 'diet' I have ever done. I am the lightest I've been for around 15 years or so. Good luck with it and if your are struggling just come on here and have a moan - it really helps0

Thanks chicvic, I'm wayyyy too far into that category, got to try something, and still being able to eat a full sized (although smaller than a few months ago!) roast meal or cottage pie or whatever 5 days a week will be good. Plus no feeling guilty about fish and chips now and then.
Though, christmas day is a wedneday, I'll fast that tuesday instead0 -
generally speaking, diets are not good for you.0

Hahaha, I won't fast that day eitherI'm still obese but working on it! I love the fact that fish and chips and anything else is not off limits. If you like or don't mind cooking I can really recommend the Hairy Bikers Diet books, lovely curries for less than 500 cal!

What an inspiring thread!
I had thyroid cancer last year and had my thyroid removed - since then my weight has gone up one and a half stone. I've made a few half-hearted attempts to do something about it, but the time has come to really get a grip now! I think 5:2 is the way to go... am posting here so that I actually make a commitment and stick to it!0 -

Not sure what you are getting at Tom, but generally speaking a diet is what everyone does, dieting is when you cut things out :Dhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DietFollowing horizon 5-2 started 28/01/13 target where I am now ish
Maintaining now as DW doesn't want my legs to get any skinnier

Well am still fasting, though am in maintenance mode now and as long as I keep below 90lbs I will be happy, 88lbs this week
.
Good luck to everyone starting out and those stilll fasting, I might be sad but really enjoy my fast day food, even sadder that I have the same meal though have included a corn on cob with it recently with salt no butterFollowing horizon 5-2 started 28/01/13 target where I am now ish

Well, I said about doing this a while ago and never did, so I'm starting next week - fast days will be wednesdays and sundays most likely, I was thinking of weighing each Monday morning? Just because it's the first day of the week and I like that.
I'm morbidly obese so I'm thinking of around 600 calories a day not 500, but I'll allow myself some freedom, not give up if I go to say 700 as it's still a good reduction. Worked out 2 weetabix with a drop of milk is only about 150 calories! So that and a small ready meal (or homemade, but with depression I can't always count on that) gives me 2 filling meals for my fast days, shouldn't be ridiculously hard to stick to. I've been cutting down on normal days for a while so hoping it works.
I struggle majorly on period (well, off my pill) weeks so it may not be as good 1/4 weeks, but maybe with it only being 2 days I'll be ok - I guess I could try a higher restriction if the normal isn't enough, but even if I can only do it 3 of 4 weeks, I'm hoping I'll lose.
With exercise it should hopefully give me a deficit of around 2lbs a week to lose, would be great!
Fingers crossed. I may sometimes ramble here for support.
Yes, do come here for support. Ignore the odd person who is anti for some bizarre reason. Michael Mosley is still looking wonderful on the 5:2 (or 6:1 maintenance).
What you are doing is great, and congratulations to you. The good thing about this diet is it's flexibility, (and how cheap it is), so I also do 4:3 on occasion to get back (if I've been on holiday, had visitors, etc). I'll be on 5:2 next week. I also do a combination of fresh foods and ready meals on fast days. The essence of the diet is 500 calories, but, Lordy, rather do 600 until you feel ready to do the 500 (I bet it's sooner rather than later, you soon get into it).
But I do think you should eat normally on certain non-fast days to avoid the idea that your body goes into starvation mode, and also to keep you on the diet. Michael Moseley's website gives you an idea of how many calories you should be having a day.

PS - if people think this is a new diet, my very thin sister was doing this in the 60's - except she didn't eat a thing on her fast day. So nothing new about it. She's one of the healthiest people I know, she's 77 and looks incredible.0 -
I didn't have chance to pop in this morning and tell you all my fab news.
Scales read an even 10stone today! :j
That's me at my first goal weight. I will carry on until I'm happier with the way things look, although that is getting very close.
I don't know what I'll do when I see less than 10stone come up on the scales. Probably dance around the house like a loon!0
