Afternoon all,
Is it ok to join in on this please? have had a quick look through the thread and see that quite a few of you are doing the 5.2 plan but just wondered if anyone had had sucess with doing the 16/8 or thirder plan as its also known? sorry if I have missed posts discussing this, as I say I only had a quick look through the thread. I saw the programme but have not read the book but do plan to do so to get more info on this
Bottom line is I am short and a bit of a chubster at 5ft 2 and weighing just over 13 stone! so need to shift it, have tried every diet known to man and had some success with slimming world in the past but hate being on a diet and either become obsessive about it or complete moody pants! Years ago I never used to eat breakfast just naturally started eating around midday and had dinner at 7pm and never ate again until the next day and maintained a healthy weight so I am intrigued to learn more about this, breakfast started creeping back in around 7 years ago and am now wondering if the two are linked as have been around 2 stone heavier since , am not in a huge rush to lose it but a gradual loss would be nice, if anyone can share their success or any advice it would be much appreciated
Thanks
Welcome Watto
A few people have discussed the 16/8 but I can't remember myself if they had seen success on it yet, all I remember is them talking about how it was done. But my memory's awful so someone else may know better than me.
I'm an inch taller than yourself and at my heaviest was over 13 stone too. I'm 10stone 3lbs now so it can definitely be done, god knows if I can do it anyone can!:o
As for breakfast being the cause of your weight gain, I'm not sure that can be it alone. Breakfast is pretty important anyway but it's mostly going to be down to what you were eating. Nowadays I only ever skip breakfast on fast days, on normal days brekkie is either scrambled egg and smoked salmon or porridge with fruit.
Anyway, good luck with 5.2 or 16/8, whichever you decide. We're all here most days if you need a moan, a bit of help/advice and to keep updated0 -
i did 16:8 for 2 weeks, definitely felt some fat loss but the scales stayed the same. being the impatient so & so that i am, i switched to 5:2 instead & have now lost about 9 pounds in 4 weeks.
i felt like 16:8 suited me, eating 12pm-8pm daily, but perhaps it's more for maintenance? i shouldn't have given up on it so quickly, but i needed to 'lose weight' before my holiday this weekend. i'd definitely give it a go again in the future & give it at least 6 weeks of trying i think.0 -
I've not tried 16:8 but I might give it a go today. I'm supposed to be fasting but I'm seriously not in the mood. I've done 2 fasts already this week, so maybe I'll have an 8 hour eating window today.
Not sure how it works though, I'm sure a person can cram an awful lot in during those 8 hours0 -

Hi there 1940's gal,
Thanks for your reply and well done on your success on the 5.2 bet you feel great after losing the weight, Can I ask how hard you found the fast days in the beginning? and do you space out the 500 cals into small snacks or all in one main meal?
I am planning to download the book this weekend and have a good read, I like the idea of doing the 5.2 but start feeling ill and shakey if I go to long without food and mentally I think I might crack after ten minutes lol so am leaning towards the 16.2 at the moment but until I have read the book I will decide then.
I think your right about the weight gain not just being down to breakfast I seem to follow a pattern of being single and staying slim, get in a relationship and put on about 2 stone or so! what doesn't help is that my boyfriend of 7 years eats like a horse but does not gain weight! grrrr!
Before I met him I was around 11 stone and felt ok at that weight but just used to eat between 12-9pm or so, didnt know about fasting then but just could never be bothered getting out of bed ten mins earlier to make breakfast before work so eventually stopped eating it, I met him and lots of meals out or lounging on sofa with wine and ice cream followed and for the past few years I have had a bad habit of having those belvita breakfast biscuits on the way to work and then lunch and dinner, with the odd twix thrown in for good measure! most weekends are a takeaway or two and more wine so all that explains why I am 13st!
I will have a read and keep you posted, cheers x0 -

Hi AbbieCadabra
Thanks for your reply and well done on your weight loss, must admit I can be an inpatient so and so too so your not alone there!
I guess if your feeling fat loss eventually that will show as inch loss then finally weight loss on the scales
I just replied to 1940's gal above but am going to download the book and have a read over the weekend I think the 16.8 might work better for me in the long run, I kind of naturally followed this pattern before around 7/8 years ago and was certainly lighter than I am now and felt more energetic but will read the book and decide then
Have a great holiday

Hi there Ruby_Ruby
Well done on your weight loss, how are you finding this?
I don't know a great deal about the 16.8 yet or the 5.2 so will be reading up this weekend and doing either one but I used to follow the 16.2/ 8 hour way of eating around 7/8 years ago without realising I was technically fasting or on a "diet" it was simply because I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed any earlier to make breakfast before work lol! it seemed to work for me at that time I just used to start eating at lunch time and then have dinner and that was it but will have a read and go from there either on the 16.8 or 5.2
Cheers x0 -
Thanks Watto
Thanks for that. It's been OK, my fasts have really varied, some have been no bother at all, others have been a total pain, but as a WOE I really enjoy it, and know it's one I'll be able to stick with.
Here are a couple of links you might find useful,
You can get an idea of how much you should be having on your eat days by calculating your TDEE http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/
TBH I only used it early on to get an idea, now I don't worry about it too much.
If you open an account here and join the 5:2 groups you'll find even more info http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ .0 -

Go in 'Groups' do a search for 5:2, or if you can't see groups easily, do a search for 5:2 in 'Community'. When you find the 5:2 groups, join them, then you'll be able to see them easily on your homepage.0 -

Fast days were hard in the beginning but they certainly got easier, as anyone here will tell you. Though every now and then they are still difficult. It's entirely down to mood though, I find at least.
I do space out my calories but that's because of work. I find I need something while there mainly because of how long my days are. Getting up at 5 on days and not getting home until gone 10 on afters. But it's usually only some cherry toms or other fruit that I take. I'd say 350-400 of my calories are in the one meal though.
If I feel a bit weak on fast days or start to go hungry I find a hot drink helps. I like the Cadbury Highlight hot chocolate too, a sachet is only 40 calories.
As for putting the weight on while you're in a relationship, I think a heck of a lot of people would be able to sympathise with that! For me I put the weight on when I left school at 16 and started work at McDonalds. Full time work+free food each shift was never going to equal a good thing :rotfl: That was when I had zero self control lol.
