4 Have grapefruit for breakfast - it too will suppress the appetite and help burn the fat
Just a quick comment on that; I don't think any food has ever been proven to "suppress appetite or help burn fat" .
Also a quick word of caution; grapefruit interacts with quite a few medications, including blood pressure medication, statins and some cancer drugs... so not the food stuff for everyone.

    Hello all :)

I've had a fast day today. Still opting for 4:3 at the mo. Today's the third day where I've not had anything all day and saved all my calories for dinner. Today was payday too so I treated myself to an M&S Fuller Longer meal (370cals) and a Count On Us Chocolate Mousse (95cals) for desert :)

I'm getting used to being able to go all day without anything. I find I'm hungry mid-morning then by lunchtime I'm fine and then it's off to the gym and I'm not hungry again until I get home.

Are the health benefits any different if you only have 1 or 2 meals on fast days?

The way I read it the longer you go without food the better. If your body is not digesting food it goes into repair mode, this is when you gain the health benefits. I save my meal for 18:00 and have nothing in between except coffee and water.

  • I don't use this thread much, but could do with a kick today.

Yesterday was a fast day, and fine. Today I struggled to motivate to eat breakfast. (In the end I ate some cold chicken, not terribly traditional) and a probiotic yoghurt.

Does anyone else find non fast days more difficult? I know I needed to break the fast this morning to keep metabolism up and to stay healthy (in all senses).

I am also finding it difficult to eat enough on non - fasting days . I am sure this interferes with the process of weight loss too so I really have to make myself eat more on those days

Not "proven" but a recent trial showed that a grapefruit before meals reduced the belly fat of 1 group

Studies have shown that increased levels of insulin produce increased hunger and increased food intake.

Eating grapefruit has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity

Just be very careful when making these kinds of statements; what your links say is a lot of 'appear' rather than conclusively prove and also are limited to a particular group of people in a limited clinical context or refer to studies in rats and shouldn't be extrapolated.
There have been so many fads and miracle food in the past that we should always take such claims with a pinch of salt.

There is no proof that it has such effects within the context of the 5:2 diet for the average person, even if it works for you.

I personally find that I am less hungry all morning if I have no breakfast at all ( except water and tea) than if I have something, even if the something is a grapefruit.

Not sure what is proven and what isn't, but have decided myself to have a grapefruit for breakfast on my fast day as have enough kcal to spare and am not on any medication that it could hinder.
A lot of people think the fast diet is bad, but its working for me, so may as well throw a grapefruit in as well :D
