The facts are freepost is a service that is paid for by whomever the label is addressed to ie: an online shop. dependant on the service the business is paying for, this would be classed as 1st or 2nd class post.
Freepost is not another type of service altogether. It just means it is a pre-paid returns service provided by the seller, as opposed to making the buyer pay return costs.
If the buyer wants to add recorded then they pay the excess in this case 95 pence.
Recorded Signed For™ costs just 95p plus First or Second Class postage and prices vary according to weight. Check the table below for the total price including Recorded Signed For™ cost:
Yes is does say this on the RM site, but your missing the point that postage has already been paid curtesy of the pre-piad label thus eliminating the need for another stamp.Like soolin ive done this on occasion at my local post office without a hitch.

They're not missing the point. Just refusing to admit they can't read and understand what's in front of them.
I also have posted many FP items, and prepaid envelopes, with recorded added. 95p is the charge.
However, I've no objection to snigger paying more. On you go.

So are you saying you cannot get a POP when sending a freepost item, since you are not paying the postage?
Insurance is the same for RD and non RD items
I was just mentioning the recorded delivery part.

POP is available for all sent items and can be requested by the sender at the Post Office regardless of whoever pays the postage. (As you well know, Custardy)

Recorded, is a supplementary service paid for by the sender so that he/she can receive proof that the item was delivered, when and to whom. The 95p (or whatever) Recorded Delivery Fee is NOT part of the postage cost.

I have two Freepost licences (ie I am the addressee) and I can confirm I receive them (when the sender adds RD) with the recorded label/barcode, never with a stamp/postage for the main service......just the enhancement.

Will the royal mail themselves be able to solve this problem as it does seem confusing, you'd think it would be listed on the price sheet somewhere, but I guess RM don't like to discuss discounted services with the general public.

Having been told two different things at the post office, I'm not sure contacting them would help.

It's not a problem that needs solving. The staff who told you it needs a stamp also are simply wrong.
Ontheir system, when they input postage, there is a section which allows them to put in prepaid postage.

Sorry but without a source, your opinion is neither more nor less valid than theirs.

Also there might be some confusion over pre-paid envelopes and a written on freepost code, the first of which should be fine according to my local PO, but the second isn't and requires a stamp.

Only in your head. The posters who have replied to you REALLY DO know what they're talking about.

There is no difference at all between prepaid and handwritten freepost. Royal Mail bill the customer in exactly the same way.
It says nowhere on the RM website that you can use two second class stamps as first class postage for a certain size and weight - but you can.
Write to the royal mail if you want a "source"

lol,This is like a soap opera gone bad.
So could you explain the difference between a pre printed and hand written freepost?
