I always say a big thanks when I think they deserve it. I recently told the store manager in Newlook abou the fab service I received and she said she would pass on the comments. I have done it in other shops and the just looked at me as if I was mental and walked away as soon as they could.

I know someone who got a lot of help with her shopping at a supermarket when someone got soaked in rain helping her so she called the store to thank him, she then got a call back saying the person had been given a days paid holiday. So it not only helped her but made his day too.

Thats nice - it should be the people GIVING the good service that receive the rewards not the people receiving it!!

i agree! I wrote to a cosmetics company called MeMeMe to say how much i liked their make-up and they sent me a goodie bag with loads of full sized products! we should definitely get freebies for being genuinely nice. Give MeMeMe a go though, i'm not sure of the address but i'm sure it will be on the net somewhere, and it's stocked in larger superdrug stores. I didn't send a proof of purchase or anything but received my goody bag within 2 weeks.
Wins since June: iPod shuffle 1gb, Samsung g800, cinema ticket, lush retro giftbox, 2x mp3 downloads, a big box of food (???)
  • I always make a point of sincerely thanking anyone who is helpful. If in a store I sometimes find the manager and tell them about the helpful member of staff. - A few years ago I did this when an assistant in Boots had been extremely helpful and the manager asked me then if I would mind writing to head office about it, so I did. - I received an appreciative letter back and was informed that as a result of my letter, the helpful member of staff had been made 'employee of the month' or something like that, and had received a £25 award...(o: - So she definitely was rewarded for her good service.

I think that if one is going to take the trouble to write letters of complaint then one should also write letters of commendation. i have written a few of each in the past, and quite frankly praising people is much more pleasurable. Working in the NHS you tend to appreciate people taking the time to write, especially if the outcome has been poor for them personally. I would also like to point out that the nurses, because we are visible get pressies/cards at christmas, but the backroom staff such as portes, pathology staff, radiographers all work Christmas too and get little recognition for it. I always make the effort to send them cards and a pressie each year, it makes me feel good too.........
Are those shopping bags you're carrying really bags of debt???

I bought a set of Dome pans at the Galleria in Hatfield and when I got home I found there was no lid for the frying pan.

So, I wrote telling them what a lovely set of pans they were and could they please send me a quote for the cost of a lid.

Two days later, a thank you note and a free lid (worth about 10.00) arrived in the post.

When I was a student, we had a competition between housemates to see who could legitimately obtain the most freebies. It turned into a group effort and we had standard letters 'thanking' biscuit manufacturers, breweries and others for the stuff we liked. In the end we got some free Kitkats and amazingly a lightbulb!!, but maily we had money off coupons for all sorts of things, beer, washing up liquid, etc. etc.

We soon realised that 'thanks with suggestions' were more profitable as big companies values this more. - I think we might even have encouraged flavoured kitkats!

But don't listen to me, I'm only in this mess becasue of student debts!!
  • Just being nice in general to shop staff does pay dividends. I work for a large diy chain and meet alot of customers. The nice ones go in my diary and when we have 15% or 20% off weekends I will always post them a voucher. The old Victor Meldrews miss out!!!. If you have a complaint write a funny poem or a funny story because that usually pay dividends. Owt for nowt ( or for those below Carlisle anything for nothing ) is the only reason we listen to Martin, if not your on the wrong page. Good luck to one and all in getting your freebies

I think this is a great idea, not for the freebies but because I don't think people say thank you enough these days. I'm definitely in

M & S give their staff a service award of £5 upwards if a customer comments on good service or if they get a good report from a mystery shopper so it always pays to pass on comments about good service.

OK, I'll start giving it a go and let you know how I get on. I gather you have to put your postal address in an email?
