Most women wear subtle make-up to give themselves a bit of colour. For me it's thinning eyebrows and deep-set piggy eyes which need bringing out.

My best friend never wears make-up, but she is blessed with a rosy skin.

Just curious and maybe it's because if I ever wear it it's of the goth variety but why do so many folk wear make up every single day? I don't bother, I like my face the way it is added to which I've always found that an extra few minutes cuddled up to my OH is more fun :rotfl:

Not being nasty just really interested in why some people seem to feel the need to wear it all day, every day...................

I'm 32 now and have worn make-up everyday since i was around 16/17 , not a lot , a bit of mineral powder foundation , concealer (i still get spots!) , mascara (so my eyes don't look like p!ss holes in the snow!) and a bit of lip gloss. the make-up just makes my skin look smoother and gives me a bit of colour. i don;t feel i'm finished until my make-up is on. I guess it depends if you started with make-up when you were a teenager as once you start you just can't stop (like pringles!). You get in such a habit of putting it on everyday and how it makes you look , I feel grotty if i don;t have anything on at all and look like i've been dead about a week! lol

I'm willing to bet you weren't absolutely perfect when you started out either, and even if you don't think they're much competition there's still no need to be nasty about them, they aren't in fact 'little girls' and at least they've got the courage to attempt starting a little business so young.
    I don't believe I said I was perfect when I started

However, I knew that infills were part of the job - NOT an optional extra - and I knew that it was going to take a lot more than just sticking a few tips on, and then waiting for them to fall off, to call myself a nail technician - much as people like to believe otherwise, it takes a LOT of work to produce beautiful nails.

I did say that if she were willing to learn properly (meaning all aspects of the job...) and charge accordingly (because she won't even be making apprentice-worthy wages at those prices) then she'd be taken underwing and she'd have the potential to be awesome. But a half assed, uninsured attempt (I don't know if you've seen any of the allergic-reaction threads in the health and beauty board? Our chemicals can be dangerous in the wrong hands), no matter how valiant it may seem to earn pocket money for oneself (because that's why she does it) is not how you go about becoming nail tech/businesswoman of the year. It takes work, not just waking up one day and thinking "I know, I'll start a business!".

I've dealt with ladies who have had their skin torn/ripped off and with ladies who have had their nails filed almost right off and these girls are contributing to that. I guess you have to be in the industry to understand fully the possible implications.

It's like people who fit hair extensions and then can't cut them. They call themselves hairdressers. Well no, they're not actually. If they can only be bothered learning about one part of the service, then they can't possibly call themselves hairdressers.

How about 'if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all'?

I wear it everyday, it makes me feel better about myself. Even nipping to the shops will not go without at least some concealer under my eyes

i always wear makeup for work and if I am going anywhere, I dont wear make up when I am in the house though.

I dont feel right going anywhere without makeup, just feel more dressed with it on.

My makeup is natural though, I am late 30s and think that this suits me best for everyday.

I am olive skinned and when I am tired I look grey, a bit of makeup definitely makes me look more alive

Really? Couldn't possibly be that I think your nastiness towards 19 year olds trying to earn a living stinks?

People who are secure and confident in their talents shouldn't feel the need to belittle others, they aren't hurting you.

Maybe not but unfortunately its a few people on these 1 day courses that give professional beauticians (who have trained and worked hard to get where they are) a bad name. Im sure its extremely frustrating for someone who has a great reputation and a good clientele to lose a lot of business overnight because of others who offer the service at a cheaper price – some don’t even withstand the slum of the couple of months until the clientele return.

I appreciate that everyone needs to start somewhere in business but unfortunately these 1 day courses are not doing people favours. If people want a cheap manicure/facial/massage etc I suggest they visit their local hair and beauty college where they are being trained and assessed correctly and few mistakes with chemicals are made.

I actually walked out of a salon once when I went for a (rare) manicure due to the state of the technicians hands and nails. I have usually always done my own nails as I like to buff them rather than paint but occasionally I will go to one for my cuticles to be done. If the technician cant look after her own hands how am I meant to trust her with mine?!

No, they're not hurting me - in fact, I get more clients due to them - but there is the potential to hurt whoever sits in their chair.

You can be as obtuse as you like, you can ignore or argue the point as much as you like, heaven knows the thread has been derailed enough (and for that, OP, I offer an apology for my part) but the fact remains that people who have no idea how should NOT be using potentially harmful chemicals. There are risks of overexposure, which could lead to allergies (which could be anything from an itch, which to the untrained wouldn't register and they'd keep using the product, thus perpetuating and escalating the problem, to burning blisters underneath the nail plate - it makes my blood run cold to imagine just how much that hurts :(). And that's before we deal with the fact that the cheap acrylics that they use (because, charging so little, they can't afford decent ones) can be so dangerous that they've actually been banned in some states in America. They are actually more dental acrylic, so you can imagine how hard they are but they don't stick very well so the natural nail has to be 'keyed' - in other words, filed half-off - in order to get them to stick. Enhancement products should break with the natural nail - somethings got to give and if it's not the acrylic, then the natural nail will buckle up from its bed.

These girls are not insured, they're not running real businesses, they're doing nails to earn pocket money. So if they DO hurt someone, then there is no reprisal. Only the risk of permanent damage to the nail plate and lifelong allergies. In fact, they're not just playing, they're downright dangerous! But apparently that's ok.

Again, as I said before, if they were to invest in real training and products and charge a decent amount which would actually allow them to earn a living, then I would be the first to applaud them. But I will not allow myself to applaud girls who are messing with chemicals that they know nothing about. They're playing with fire.

Finally, I would like to apologise again to the OP for my part in the derailment of the thread :)
