I appreciate that everyone needs to start somewhere in business but unfortunately these 1 day courses are not doing people favours. If people want a cheap manicure/facial/massage etc I suggest they visit their local hair and beauty college where they are being trained and assessed correctly and few mistakes with chemicals are made.
The colleges are an EXCELLENT place to go if you're after a budget service!

The girls are always supervised so you will never experience anything untoward - in fact the colleges are (to their credit) almost TOO careful :T

Gosh some people read far to much in to what people say on here! This thread has been hilarious to read, so many people getting indignant and cross on a thread about make up!

I wear a little tinted moisturiser if I'm going out and maybe some concealer if I have a spot, I don't bother if I'm not going anywhere. The few times I've gone out without make-up and not done my hair will be the occasional when I bump into an ex!

freyasmum - I understand where you're coming from. I use to work in a gym and the Personal Trainers use to get really annoyed when some staff went on a 1 day gym instructor course and would then call themselves 'Personal Trainers.' The qualified trainers would always have a degree and then a separate personal training qualification which can cost around £3,000 extra so they would understandably get annoyed to lose clients to somebody with a 1 day course under their belt!

I think it's entirely up to the individual whether they wear make-up or not although I do think it's a shame when some won't even answer the door without any.

I rarely wear any but that's not because I think I look good without but just don't have the confidence and knowledge of how to apply and wear it. Didn't even wear it when working, rather have the extra time in bed.

For those who say it's "too much hassle" to apply makeup every day, it's no more hassle than brushing my teeth or blow drying my hair - just part of my everyday routine. Takes about seven minutes nowadays (used to take five before I had to faff around drawing pretend eyebrows on :D).

More than worth it for being able to face the world with confidence, instead of looking my age. I have the figure of a fit 30-year-old, and like to attempt to keep the face to match!
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Oh and nearly forgot; Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crüe.. Both these men wear eyeliner and are extremely yummy in my eyes :-)

Almost everyone who appears on TV is treated to the makeup room first. Not just celebs, even politicians have their shiny noses powdered!

    THANK YOU!

I'm really glad to see at least some people understand the dangers but this thread has, if anything, highlighted just how much the general public need educating. A set of nails may look benign, but tell that to anyone who's ever had an infection or dramatically thinned nail plates or nails which have completely lifted off the bed.

Just because the end point - the application that you guys see - looks easy doesn't mean there hasn't been a lot of work gone into learning all the different disorders and diseases of the nail and surrounding skin, the anatomy and physiology of the hand and arm and the health and safety implications - it wasn't too long ago that an older lady was badly burnt due to the vapours in the salon being ignited  People appear not to notice that we're working (and, obviously, I'm including PTs in this too) with the human body and it's sadly all too easy to cause damage.

You wouldn't let a guy who'd done a one day course come and service your gas boiler, and nor would let an auxilliary place an IV just because she has the word 'nurse' in her job title. And it's not just the 'young girls' I have an issue with - I'd have the same problems if it were a 60 year old great-grandma of 10 doing the same but the fact of the matter is that it's the young ones doing it around here.

Those who are serious about beginning a proper career are only to be encouraged, mentored and aided as much as possible/they want.

Are we still talking about false nails?

Probably just as well I'm not allowed to wear them, seems like its a minefield.

I don't wear makeup regularly. Having a baby around I don't seem to be able to find time to do makeup, although before she arrived i never wore it day to day. Only for a night out etc.

I do wonder how the mums at baby classes manage to get out of the house looking so immaculate and then there's me with hair always tied back, no makeup on and usually baby sick somewhere on me!
