Wow, you don't teach all of this do you? It's eye opening and I appreciate you posting all this excellent information, thanks! :)

And are the recovery drinks they try and get you to buy and take on such things like Insanity, are they really that good or can you make your own?

When I was a lot younger (17 in fact) and used to go the gym after school in Nottingham with a few of my pals, I used to crack open an egg and whisk it into a glass of milk, don't anyone batted and eyelid back then..... I never got ripped, gained weight or toned up then either, LOL!

I will check out Greek yoghurt in a minute ;) (why does everyone wink when they say Greek yoghurt?!?!)

Can you get sugarless peanut butter in ASDA or Tesco? I can't spend much remember :(

I might switch back to full fat whole milk again then.
I do put pasteurized egg whites in using two chicks or egg nation.

I don't understand a word of that, sorry.

    Cheers again :j
    * Check out Greek Yoghurt ;)

    * Peanut butter without sugar (not reduced fat). Once the tub is finished look around again.

    * Whole milk is better for the absorption of fat soluble vitamins

    * Fat is not the enemy. Sugar is! Simple carbs can rise up the blood sugar too quickly leading to high glycemic index. Go for complex carbohydrates. http://www.helpwithcooking.com/nutrition-information/carbohydrates.html

    * cracking an egg- LOL. I know someone who puts raw egg. You might get some Health and Safety comment and say you might get Salmonella. I do put pasteurized egg whites in using two chicks or egg nation.

*Myfitnesspal is free and it helped me a lot in understanding nutrition.

    * Perfect recovery drink postworkout? Chocolate Milk! Nesquick is the cheapest as it can last a bit longer. Lots of Nesquick in Lidl.

Not too bad of a shopping!

  • Most supermarkets sell the Whole Earth brand of peanut butter which is without sugar. Failing that, you can try Holland & Barratt which also sell almond butter, which is yummy!

You can also buy pasteurised egg whites in some sainsbury now, by Two Chicks. They are safe to be added to shakes, etc for an added protein boost. Again, Holland & Barratt sell them. However, I'd rather have the whole of the egg, most of the nutrition is in the yolk.

I did actually see Whole Earth peanut butter in ASDA tonight but it was like 3 times as much as ASDA brand. Maybe when I've won the Lottery eh? :p

Thank you though. I will look in H&B as there is one in Rochdale.

I wondered what "two chicks" was! Thanks for that :)

I think I'd rather crack open an egg and put it all into a blender than get pasteurised egg whites, and surely half a dozen "cheapy" eggs WILL be cheaper?!

Thanks to everyone for posting on here and sorry for taking over this Insanity thread :(

    Aha, Greek yogurt!

    http://www.livestrong.com/article/86488-benefits-greek-yogurt/

So, I am taking Whey Protein powder in a shake and also mixed in with porridge oats from Monday onwards, but if i take Greek yoghurt, it's got the whey taken out of it? LOL

This nutrition business is soooooooo confusing, yet educating!

P.S. Lavandergirl and Just a Girl, you two rock! :)

    Recovery Drink
Just copied and pasted from http://www.coachpags.com/the-benefits-post-workout-recovery-drinks/

The question is do recovery drinks or recovery formulas work? And the answer is yes. And the reason they work is recovery drinks are different from protein powders because they are composed of simple and complex carbs.

The ratio of Simple carb to Protein is usually 4:1. The complex and simple carbs are excellent for glycogen replenishment. Muscle glycogen recovery is the process through which the muscles of the body are replenished with carbohydrate sources that have been depleted through the energy expended in exercise. They also contain vitamins and antioxidants, which will help to decrease soreness of muscles after workouts and help to your body’s ability to repair and grow your muscles. Recovery drinks also make a great post workout meal. It will keep your appetite down and replace the needed fuel your body needs that you burned during the workout and will help you avoid making a bad post workout meal choice such as fast food or a large portion meal

So by basically drinking a recovery drink after a workout your muscles are less likely to become sore and your body and muscles will recover faster.

I actually use High 5 Energy Source 4:1 as a recovery drink (also as an energy boost during long endurance events) and it's the best product I've ever tried. Great results, tastes great and not very expensive either. One of those large tubs lasts me ages :)

If going down the chocolate milk route, i wouldn't use a commercial milkshake but perhaps make one with milk and cocoa powder and a glucose source, but I'd have to work out quantities to get the ratios right. Not something I fancy doing tonight so leave it with me ;)

PS look out for Meridian brand nut butters. Holland & Barratt sell them amongst other places and at ~£5 per 1kg tub is much cheaper than supermarket peanut butters :)

PPS - don't be alarmed to find a pool of oil floating on top of the peanut butter, this indicates it's not hydrogenated, therefore healthier, and you simply stir it in before using.
