  • We had Cowboy Pie last night (DD's fave!) :)

    * Make a basic mince and onion mixture like you would for a shepherds pie (I use 1lb mince, 1 onion, 1 red oxo, splash of Lea and Perrins, squirt of tomato puree, bit of water and some gravy granules to thicken) and add a tin of baked beans to it. Pour into an ovenproof dish.

    * Peel and slice potatoes thinly and par boil until just soft, drain and arrange over the mince and bean mixture.

    * Sprinkle with grated cheese and bake for about 20 mins on Gas 6 until top is golden and cheese is bubbling.

    Hope this helps

    You could have
    * shepards pie or a hot pot type thing with the mince (use casserole mix)and sliced new potatoes on top

*tuna and sweetcorn bake with a parsley sauce and sliced new potatoes on top

    * gammon with frozen veg and cheese sauce (sauces are really easy)

    * sausage meatballs in tomatoy pasta..you could do garlic flatbreads (really easy on a recent thread)

    * Tuna pasta bake

    * chilli con carne & rice

    * egg fried rice, spicy chicken drumsticks

    * fishfingers chips n beans mmmm

with a few more ingredients like flour, spuds, herbs, spices, gravy stuff you could do a bit more like sausage pie! which sounds minging but is nice and delias recipe for pastry is really really easy (honest)

let us know how you get on

No probs, use one of your casserol mixes or some gravy instead? the mix will have onion powder or bits of dried onion in it anyway. You can experiment with anything you fancy :j

I've got some sausages left over from yesterday which the whole household seem to be scared to eat cold... they're getting it chopped up and mixed in with chopped toms, basil, garlic, tom puree with a spash of Lee & Perrins and some onion on top of spaghetti for supper tonight ;) Yum :p

I keep Worcester Sauce & Mushroom ketchup (or Chinese fish sauce) as a store cupboard basic cos you can use them on so many things :D

Madmum.. I read something about weevils in out of date flour.. don't ask me what the hell weevils are though... got images in my head of weird looking womble things!

Having read all your posts (and laughed so much!!) today about what to eat for tea tonight I thought I'd make Toad in the Hole. Just rung my Mum for her yorkshire pud recipe (mmm lovely!) and opened the flour bag to find...........................bloody little black crawly things - the dreaded weevil  So flour gone in bin and having to beg kids to go to shop and get me some more

a MIX  for yorkies!!!??? Hope is a home made mix!
I am always amused when people say they use bought mix for pancakes/yorkies as is easier than making their own - all you do is add milk and egg!! :rotfl:

Er that's exactly what I do with flour at home!! Just add eggs and milk!
    :rotfl:

    Have fun
    Cheers

I have to admit that I buy the mix. I have tried and tried making it all from scratch and they never turn out right. With the mix they are always perfect, I know it's just a case of getting the amounts exactly right but even when I follow recipes they're not as nice. And the mix is 11p, and you add water and an egg, so it's not much cheaper making them from scratch because you need milk then.

It's still a lot cheaper than those nasty frozen ones.

If anyone has a foolproof recipe I'll give it a go though

I'm thinking toad in the hole will have to be on the menu next week now though. Yummy!
