    No, it finished last Thursday.
  • My Dell laptop (not this one mentioned here but very similar spec) has a 10GB RECOVERY partition that has only about 4GB of data on it (majority looks like a ghost file or similar). As the hard drive is only 80GB I was planning on burning this data to DVD and deleting the partition. Does anyone know any good reason not to do this? I doubt i will ever use the recovery anyway as i prefer a clean Vista install from the OS discs provided.

  • I've been inspired to post for the first time in ages.

I've been following this thread since it first appeared and took the plunge after having struggled with my 5 yr old (PC World) Presario for ages. Couldn't resist the enthused comments when this offer was valid......took the advice from a few of the early posts....went for:

TL56; 15.4 wide XGA with Truelife; VISTA; 2048 RAM; 120 GB; 6 cell battery; 90 day C&R £457.08 all in.

I have to say I've learnt loads from you guys...thanks for all the help. Very happy with the 1501, but after the steam powered Compac I guess I would be! Also very very impressed with DELL, again after PC World's ineptitude, a revelation.

I ordered online 27/3, had a call the day after and delivery 30/3, even though original order said it would be by the 4 April.

I had the noisy drive Custard80, after an email and a phone call (got slightly very quicker response on phone) had a replacement Hitachi for Hitachi the next day, installed it myself with a bit of tutoring over the phone and problem sorted.

Jaxxy00, my index score is 3.0 too, I've tried the AMD download but some errors in installing part of it and doesn't seem to have done anything.

zoopakev, also had the problem closing the lid and having it log off, helpful Indian lady sorted that over the phone by taking over remote access.

As a side thought, I work in middle management for a decent sized Financial Services co and have scoffed at Indian call centres in the past....over the past few days I've been blown away by the excellence of DELL's Indian support. One lady in particular helped me enormously...my mobile signal kept dropping as she was talking me through a few things, she kept ringing me back with enormous patience. She's phoned me 3 days on the run at 5pm as arranged to see if my new drive had arrived, to see if I'd sorted the router etc......not rocket science, but very impressive and a customer service lesson to all. I've had a few problems with this laptop that's true, but my opinion of DELL couldn't be higher now because of how the issues have been dealt with. PC World et al, take note.

Melodytoon - The router I bought was the Netgear DG834G recommended to you. It's the first time I've gone wireless and I bought this one after a little research making sure I got a modem/router compatible with Vista and AOL (my ISP). Pretty easy to set up, though I ended up reading the online Manual as the Set Up wizard disc hit a fault....works fine now though. Sorted the MAC security, haven't done the WEP yet, that's my next job. (If you have an old blue AOL BT 105 modem for broadband you won't need that with this router.)

Other comments.....I'm on 32 bit version
I deleted the McAfee trail and downloaded the "free" AVG although had to send 3 texts which I think will cost me £2 plus VAT each to get an installation code.
I know some don't like the Truelife reflective screen, but I do...
Hardest job I had was sussing the order of things to sort. eg had to set up the router first to get an internet connection through Internet Explorer before downloading the AOL 9.0 VR (Vista Ready) software..(the old disc I had was only good up to XP)..although I found out later you can get the AOL 9.0 VR on disc free from Asda and Comet.

Sorry for long message, but wanted to link all the other coments I've benefitted from and hope I inspire/help others....PS I'm not on commission for DELL, I just really appreciate the rare good service I receive.

PS Does anyone have any tips for prolonging battery life? That was the first thing that died on my old laptop. Most of the time I'm working at home and could plug into the mains...is that advantageous?....leave battery in or take it out?

I am waiting for my laptop to turn up and need to get a case for it. The one from PC World seems a good price for Leather but looking at the picture the case doesnt look big.

Has anyone bought one or seem one of these ? Can anyone tell me if you will be able to get the laptop in it and the power cables that it needs ?

the 1501 and cables does fit in it and its a very good leather case for the price:T

I have always left my battery in even though I have my laptop plugged into the mains most of the time. The battery now doesnt seem to last very long at all so maybe I should have taken it out right from the begining.

I dont know for sure that this is the best policy as not sure what happens to a battery that is just left for months or years on end. So I also look forward to the replies about this issue to.

You had to pay for it?! I've always used it, and downloaded the latest version onto my new laptop yesterday and never needed to pay? I hope you didnt get conned by another firm.... :o:confused:

On that note, my laptop of the same spec is perfect. I've removed all the bloatware it's running really well :)
