Yes it was a link to Vista graphics but also theres the option of others for XP also 64 bit etc so if the link is used it will take them where they need to be.

Determined by lowest subscore 3.1 overall

    Processor AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 4.6 3.1
    Memory (RAM) 896 MB 3.9
Graphics ATI Radeon Xpress Series 4.2
Gaming graphics 319 MB Total available graphics memory 3.1
Primary hard disk 65GB Free (102GB Total) 4.8

Finally downloaded and installed the drivers that you did but my score is the same. Instead of going up to 4.2 score for graphics as you have mine is still at 2.8.
When i go on my score screen and then click 'view and print details' it gives me much more in depth info and this is what it says about my graphics. Im a bit concerned at it saying dedicated graphics memory only 128mb. Shouldnt this be 256mb? What does yours say?

Display adapter type ATI Radeon Xpress Series
Total available graphics memory 319 MB
    Dedicated graphics memory 128 MB
    Dedicated system memory 0 MB
    Shared system memory 191 MB
    Display adapter driver version 8.31.100.32
    Primary monitor resolution 1280x800
DirectX version DirectX 9.0 or better

By the way anyone thinking of updating the graphics just be warned that its a bit nerve racking as the screen ends up just having a cursor at one point then it goes black and quiet, then flashes off etc. Thought i had really messed it up. Then it went all big and funny looking then once it restarted it seems ok, although im sure the desktop image has grown!!

Yes it's a bit of a con really, they make it sound like a 256mb card, but actually it uses shared system memory for half of that...
Thanks to all who post constructively.

Usually with onboard graphics you can allocate how much memory
you want it to have in the bios settings.

The laptop has just arrived :j(order was only placed in the early hours of Thursday, so I'm very pleased with that), & we're just about to set it up.

The only query is on using the wireless. We've already got a desktop pc in the house, but it's not wireless enabled (it uses a standard ADSL broadband connection via a modem) & we know absolutely nothing about how to set it up, as we've never used wireless computer gear before.

What modem/router would you suggest to enable us to either have only the laptop on a wireless connection, or even better both the pc & the laptop? We can spend up to about £100, & the OH wants to have it up & running in the next couple of days at the latest as it's his new toy (so he thinks :p:D ). It needs to have an idiot-proof set-up, for the same reason. Many thanks. :)

The phone staff get commission, there is probably nothing in it for them at this price so its better for them to fob you off and carry on with calls that make them some cash. Buy online, I tried on the phone and got no interest, my very first post mentions this.

I'm writing this on the latest version of Ubuntu Linux 'Fiesty Fawn' Live which I mentioned in the Core Duo thread.

Works perfectly with the 1501, picks up the wireless, enabled WPA2 security, net access is faster than Vista or XP, can't get the resolution quite right yet. If you fancy it the latest release is here, download, burn as an iso to a cd, then boot from the cd drive, it even has Vista Aero like features, cubed windows and wobbly windows !

When you use such a good version of Linux like this you can't help wondering how long Microsoft has got left as the operating system king.

Good to see so many of you have got the Dell, I was fortunate to pick up one of the last 1300's Pentium 1.7 mobiles at the 299 pricing error and even with daily use its still solid as a rock.

    Happy shopping.

Did you get wireless internet working when running the os from the disc?
If so, what settings did you configure/change?

hey, glad you got it ok and its working fine :)

for wireless you need one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119374

its a wireless router/modem for adsl and comes with a wireless adapter so you can make your home pc wireless.

or what you can do is just buy the above router/modem: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/52244/rb/26642212607 and have the home pc hard wired to the router as it has 4 ethernet ports aswell.

the installation should be relatively easy, there should be a setup wizard which will ask you to enter all the details of your adsl internet account (username password etc etc)

    hope this helps :)
