It runs wireless from the CD, I configured the wireless settings to talk to the router from inside Linux, its easy just fiddle with it, thats the fun part of learning a new OS.
For those of you who want to configure wireless easily on XP or Vista based laptops I can heartily recommend NetworkMagic.
Whilst I have a good knowledge of computing I do like things easy rather than techie. Networkmagic is easy, very easy infact, it is also free if you only connect one wireless desktop or laptop. Even if you connect more PC's, Games Consoles, Network Attached Storage/Printers to buy the fully featured multi device version's is between £15 and £25.
If you are a wireless virgin or even a skilled user you will love the ease with which it sets up your network with minimal input from you.
It leads you through setting up security, file and printer sharing and the latest version includes the ability to monitor what your kids are looking at (or your husband or wife !).
That all sounds like an advert, I'm not on commission, honest.
Try the fully featured version for a free for a month from here

After a months its free with slightly fewer features and for just a single PC, well worth a test drive.0 -
Just so I know what I'm up against in the search for a new laptop can someone paste in the spec and price of this dell deal.
Really grumpy i missed this dont seem to be able to get close to it (or what i think it was) at the moment!!0 -
Ok so we got out laptops yesterday, so far we havent been able to play the games we bought it for, the DVD player wont play region 2 DVD's and the CD/DVD drive sounds as if its about to break when disks are spinning. Just been on phone to Dell for 40 mins trying to sort everything out, ends up they are sending a new CD drive. However both laptops have the DVD region fault, I'm guessing this is because they are an American company?? Do you think if I threaten them by saying I'm sending them both back and want a refund that they'll maybe give me a good will gesture?0

Anyone know the cost of AVG paid for version.
Yes it was the free version. Ive used AVG now on all my home systems as long as i can remember, its brilliant. I think you will find if you buy the cost version its really not that bad a price, of the top of my head something like £24 for one or two years not sure.0 -
Well i had my 1501 delivered yesterday, simple to connect to wireless, but even with tech support helping me update the graphics driver, world of warcraft stutters badly on all settings and is almost unplayable. Also the screen colours seem really muted.
So, bargain or not, it's got to go back

Has anyone else had a problem with the DVD region? If so, have you just selected to change its region?0
-
Under xp you could change the region up to five times before it locked it. Not sure about vista. Try checking under device manager or control panel.
Intresting to here you had the same problem with the dvd drive noise.
Dell sent a replacement drive for exchange and the new one (sony) is much better. Great service, replacement drive was here within one day after the call to tech support.
Now trying to declutter it to try and speed it up! Bit disapointed in speed considering the 2gb ram and tl56 processor. Must still be some rubbish on it. Any tips?0 -
Find out what drive's in there and search online for the relevant region-free firmware (if available).0

Hi all
I need help again (sorry). I changed my router (Netgear) security option to WEP and added 128 key. But then I couldnt get back in on my original laptop and nor cud I add my new Dell laptop. I have both the laptops MAC addresses registered on the router device list(Setup Access List). I have now set security back to Disabled which I know isnt the best for security but its the only way I seem to be able to get on the internet on the 2 laptops. AOL is my internet provider. Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong ?
Also I think I have some Malware protection missing from Security. Is this what the AVG will provide ? Do people recommend it ? Can anyone give me a link to it ?
Is windows and the AVG all I need to make sure my new laptop is protected ? Before I have been using Macafee."The time is always right to do what is right"0 -
I know its late but is ths offer still going?
Both the links in the first post are now dead...0
