well I am having trouble connect the Dell to my Lan. The message I get is "Windows cannot connect to Netgear". Then I remember I had to put my sony laptop on a list to add it to the Lan.
I have a 54 Mbps wireless ADSL Firewall Router' if that helps. Also when trying to connect my new Dell I was told "unsecured Network" which suprised me as I thought I had made it secure using Mcafee - but to use it I had to turn off my windows firewall.(i think not really techie..a learner)
It says I have a "Dell wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-card" I found a section that said "Locally Administered MAC Address" but it said "Not Present"
I went into Netgear and was going to add it but it asks for the MAC address and I dont know where/how to find this - can anyone help ?
Or is there an easier way to get it connected ?"The time is always right to do what is right"0 -
Well i got mine connected in about 2 minutes to my Netgear DG834GT router. It scanned for wireless networks and found it then i just had to put my WEP key in, i was hoping it would be easy to do but that was unbelievably easy.
Sorry robrymond but i wouldnt recommend upgrading graphics now. I did it last night and carried on using my system then when i turned it on today it would not boot up. It didnt even say about safe mode etc it said something about doing a thing to see if it could repair itself if not try something else etc. So thats just my experience in case anyone else does want to have a go.
My sister had the other one i ordered at the same time and today i have compared them and her hard disk sub score is .1 higher than mine
I know its not a lot but it makes you wonder how come when they are identical.
I dont know about anyone else but ive taken off Mcaffee and installed AVG, which normally when scanning really slows things down (on my other laptop it did anyway). I was on the internet with multiple pages open and also doing something else and when i went back to desktop realised AVG had been scanning for the last 20 minutes or so and i couldnt believe i hadnt noticed a thing. That really impressed me because everything was as speedy as normal with no lagging.0 -
woohoo, got my Inspiron 640m today, very nice piece of kit, full of power (1.67ghz dual 2 core, vista home premium).
ive uninstalled all the dell clutterware and seems to be running sweet.
ive not bothered reinstalling vista as i think its ok as it is.
connected to my wireless internet straight away.0 -
Connecting to my Netgear DG834G v3 was not a simple process either. The connection was easily established, but it would only give 'limited connectivity', which meant explorer would not connect.
Rang Dell support in the end and it took them about 35mins to rectify as it would seem my IPV4 settings were incorrect when dispatched. Was trying to connect me to a 169. address rather than a 192. one.
All sorted now though !0 -
With regard to finding your mac address. I also had some troubles with this.
Please bear with me as this is from memory!
on the start bar under all programs there are some dell sections. Within these was where i found the address. Try them out. I'll try and have a look when i get home.
Typing ipconfig/all in the command line didn't find this address.
Mine was also a netgear router with WEP on as security as this is all my Wii and DS can understand!
Hope that helps.0 -
custard, just run CMD then type in ipconfig /all (with the space)

I ran CMD then typed in ipconfig /all but nothing appeared in the list !
I have just looked at my Netgear page and here wot the Wireless Settings
Name (SSID) NETGEAR
Region Europe
Channel 11
Mode g&b
Wireless Access Point
Enable Wireless Access Point - selected
Allow Broadcast of Name(SSID) - selected
Security Settings
Disable - selected
WEP(wired equivalent Privacy)
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-shared Key)
Maybe this seetings are not correct especially with regards to the
Security ones. Can anyone Advise me so I can get my New laptop connected to the Lan ? Should I have WEP or WPA selected ?"The time is always right to do what is right"0
