savage, I guess you finally went to do the hospital tour? What do you think? When I went it was very quiet and some rooms were empty, we could have a look at the waterbirth room and the general waiting area. Was it busy when you went? I might go again before the birth, I went when I was just over 3 months!
It was pretty quiet when we were there too (no screaming and very few ladies about although there clearly were some as visitors were about), they took us into one of the waterbirth rooms as well. I was hoping for it to be even less hospitally if you know what I mean, seeing as the thing is midwife led and practically new, they could have made it a bit more homely. I also don't really like that they move you about as they only have two waterbirth rooms, it would be better surely if you could settle into one place for the whole time you are there. I understand why they do it, but IMHO it would be better if you had one 'spot'.

It was better than I was expecting though from the one midwife episode I watched.

Still not sure that all this moving about in labour is a good idea, which is why I'm now thinking of home birth (I've been reading about natural birth and how it should/does progress and it seems that the way things are 'done' normally now just won't help). It seems odd to have to labour at home at first, then just as things start getting intense to force yourself out of your surroundings, get dressed, head over to a hospital, be inspected at triage, be moved to the delivery ward (hopefully) or sent home (and repeat!), possibly be put in the non-waterbirth room, then moved to the waterbirth room... from what I'm learning of natural labour the idea is to stay as relaxed as possible (and indeed when the natural 'highs' kick in you should be so relaxed you look almost asleep and it seems you are very 'inward' focussed).... I dunno. Jury's still out. I know that hubby will support me in a home birth even though he'd be happier in a hospital, but I'm pretty sure everyone (aside from the midwife friend) will freak out entirely if I mention it so if I do go down that route it's only you ladies who will know in advance!

Things are a bit different at my hospital Savage, you start off at home but then go straight to delivery suite and there is no swapping between rooms all the water birth rooms have beds in them for you to labour on too. The only time you would be moved from the room is if you need to have interventions then they would take you to theatre.

I'm not going to say don't be scared. I was and I am this time. I am totally terrified of going in to have this baby and not coming home - there I said it out loud. The terror is way worse this time as I have DS at home already and the thought of it is really upsetting me.

....erm.... I looked up maternal death rates online (I'm a statisticy-type person, sorry) and the odds of you coming home are exceptionally good, the people who don't (the very, very, few of them!) normally are alcoholic/drug users/with major pre-existing medical conditions, you are under excellent care in the UK and will come home it would seem if you are a vaguely healthy woman of childbearing age! Hope that helps, if it sends you off in terror I'll delete my post!! (I was trying to compare outcomes for home birth vs hospital birth, but didn't actually manage that...)
  • Yayy - congratulations sexymouse! That was epic! Love the name. 9lb 7oz is a good weight - still small in my world lol!

Rups - exciting on the carpet. Does it feel like things are moving forward in the house then? (and fingers crossed your big think is correct!)

DH is a big Star Wars fan which is why he makes fun of me. He seems slightly miffed that DS seems to prefer my choice of space orientated programmes than his - haha!

Savage - you'll be grand. I do find that strange when i watch things like OBEM and see people being moved about and left on their own for ages. I like that about over here. Once in the room in the delivery suite - that's where you stay til baby's born (unless you have to go to theatre). The only moving you do is any that you want to round the room. And there is always a midwife with you. If you want a home birth then go for it. Are you close to a hospital that you could be easily transferred if necessary?

I wasn't allowed a water birth with DS as I had him at night when it was quieter and I tend to pass out in high heat - which there was as its a labour ward and they seem to think it should be roasting! They wouldn't let me use the pool in case I passed out in it. Strangely although i had been really keen on it beforehand, i just wasn't bothered when they said no.

I probably didn't word it too well. Here the idea is that you go straight to delivery as well but you have to check in at triage first (different floor) where they examine you before taking you up, then if you're angling for a waterbirth those rooms need to be free, if not they'll put you in the bath if that's free, then move you on later. There was a bed in the waterbirth room although much lower than a normal hospital bed (and indeed much lower than my bed at home!) - I think they try avoid you lying down on it tbh. Then after birth you'll probably be removed from the waterbirth room fairly swiftly to let other ladies in after you.

Yes, thankfully - we're about half an hour's non-labouring walk to the hospital (measured it on the weekend before the tour!) and I reckon 5 mins in a taxi or less in an ambulance :) I was/am contemplating walking to hospital as my method of transport as being active should help baby move down the birth canal and should also distract somewhat from the contractions too, but am well aware that we'll have to take it as it comes ;)
