  • Hi all!

Baby Gracie (middle name still being decided!) was finally born at 12:40am yesterday morning weighing 7lbs 10.5oz!

I'll try and do a brief overview of my birth story.....

In at 9am to be induced; was given the pessary at about and then left to it; was checked after an hour and then every two hours but after six hours nothing had happened so the second pessary was inserted. They had already said that the cervix was effaced but that was all; at the second pessary nothing had changed. Second one went in about 4.45pm; had bad period type pains for the next few hours but no contractions until 7.45pm when they suddenly hit! And I do mean suddenly - the contractions came on very strongly and they were instantly every two minutes! I always knew that labour was likely to be more painful being induced as your body does not have time to build up to the contractions and pain gradually, but this really was extremely quick and even the midwives were surprised how quick they had come on and the frequency. Had tens machine on but this wasn't doing much; midwife came to check cos I was crying out that much they could hear me down the other end of the ward! There was still no change so I couldn't go down to the delivery suite and the midwife was concerned that I wasn't coping with the pain so she suggested pethadin. I said I didn't want this so they said to try and have a bath and then if I was still in a bad way afterwards have the pethdain. The bath helped a little to begin with but then it was no help at all! My OH was brilliant the whole way through getting me to breathe and rubbing my back but I could hardly talk to him and just kept my eyes shut a lot of the time cos in some weird way it seemed to help! Stayed in the bath for about an hour (but to be honest I had no concept of time at this point) then went back to the room . OH went to find midwife to say I wanted the pethadin, and despite telling them twice noone came to see us for over half an hour. I ended up pressing the call button and a midwife from the delivery suite came along; when she examined me she said I was 3 - 4cm dilated (it was about two hours since I was last examined when nothing had happened) and she took me to the delivery suite. There I was given pethadin and gas and air - ladies, if you have never had this before it is a very surreal experience but in all honesty it DID help! Got taken to the delivery suite at 10.45pm and Gracie was born two hours later! Midwives said it was a textbook birth even though it was surprisingly quick (I should have been at least another six hours in labour as usually you dilate roughly 1cm per hour); waters broke whilst I was pushing with a very loud noise and spurted everywhere! Lucky enoguh to only have a minimal tear so no stitches. Third stage was delivered naturally in only 8 minutes and my concerns about Gracie not breastfeeding cos of being on Pethadin were unfounded - she took to the breast straight away for about an hour! Was a bit upset that when I got taken up to the ward they turfed OH out - I really hated that! Didn't get much sleep, but Gracie slept a lot yesterday and they did say that probably was due to the drugs but she has breastfed lots since then and is a very happy contented little girl!

OH did say to the midwives who delivered Gracie that we had been told how negative pethadin was and I heard them say they were annoyed about that cos it is actually a very good drug to assist with childbirth. They explained to him that it doesn't stop the pain but that I was 'off somewhere' which was helping me to cope with what was going on! I know a lot of people are worried about having pain relief (I was one of them) so just wanted to reassure you that if you need it - have it! Baby may be a little sleepy for a while afterwards but it shouldn't affect their natural instincts or progress.

That's longer than I intended it to be! Got to go and try and get some sleep cos I have only had about six hours myself in the last three days! Hope everyone is well, sorry not had chance to read back but will catch up soon! Good luck to the boldies! x
