OMG Ikkle you win on the demanding mother stakes so far. Do you think we will all be here in 30 years moaning about our kids not letting us see grandchildren?
Why does she need to know you are having the baby, can't you tell her once he's arrived? I am already practising not answering/returning phone calls very quickly so people don't get suspicious if I am in labour
I got talked in to letting her be one of my birthing partners, so she's actually going to be there with me so no hiding it unfortunately and if I don't tell her it's going to cause big family problems more than there are already.
I think my nan has been having words with her and telling her she has to behave herself though. xYou never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I've specified no visitors other than my DH (who will be allowed to stay overnight anyway) twice in my birth plan, so I hope that if the hospital miss the first mention, they should see the second. My poor friend had just had her baby and her uncle turned up and asked where she was and they indicated the screen around her bed, and she was in the middle of her first breast feed! I do NOT want that happening.
Fingers crossed for you ikkle that your Mum won't make it. I'm sure the midwives would chuck her out if you insisted anyway, as they are there to make sure you don't go through any further stress than you need to.
Candycane I've stopped answering the phone too cos I keep getting blooming market research people etc calling. I made the mistake of putting our home number down when registering with Emma's Diary, and I know that's where some of them have got my number cos they've said so. I removed the number after a tip on here about it, only about a week after, but the damage had clearly already been done. Tip for people who've not signed up yet - don't put your phone number down.Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170 -
I have been OK with the Emma's diary thing, I tried to put down a fake one but it knew and wouldn't let me register! Haven't got much useful from them anyway, except maybe the Vertbaudet code last week, has everyone got that one - you get a free changing bag and £15 if you spend £200

Yeah I didn't get much from them either - the freebie pack from Argos was rubbish! I ask because being my first baby I am not sure what it is really needed. I do not want to buy stuff I won't be using in a couple of months and I do not have much room in the flat either. We decided we do not need a dresser, I am selling clothes on ebay so I can use for that purpose a set of drawers I have. I decided I do not need a bath after seeing how big they are and reading around forums that many people use them only once or twice. I might buy a bath inner/seat, which I believe are about £10-£15, but can be folded away. Or just do like other people and put baby in my bath when I am finishing my own. We have been given a few outfits, vests, muslim cloths, socks, cream one piece outfits (whatever they are called), toiletries, a box to put baby stuff in, toys and I might get a sterilizer too.
I think I only need the cotbed, the bedding/mattress and a baby carrier (which I prefer to the pram for public transport and use at home). . I assume all that plus a few bits and bobs in toiletries, like thermometers or sponges might be up to £400... but maybe I am assuming wrong! We are trying to buy as many nappies on offer as we can and stock up for when baby arrives. The only problem is that I do not know how many we might need!!! Do you remember how many you generally used in each size?
For the first month, we were going through approximately 10 nappies per day. Sometimes it would be 8, sometimes up to 12 but 10 on average. When a baby decides to do an explosive poo, no nappy can hold it in so I suggest you buy the cheapest nappies you can find on offer that you are happy with. During the second month, it was probably an average of 7-8 nappies per day. In the third month, it was an average of 6. Now that my baby is 3 months old, she gets changed every time she wakes up, so that's at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm after her bath, so 4 nappies a day. I expect it to stay at this level for quite some time.
My baby was 7 lbs 4 ozs when born. From what I remember, I think we had about 200 size 1 nappies in stock when she was born. She used them all and then we went on to Size 2. I think we bought/were given presents of about 150 Size 2 nappies and she used them all too before we moved on to Size 3 nappies. I think Size 1 covers 4-11lbs, Size 2 7-13lbs, Size 3 9-20lbs. So there really is no need to buy Size 2 nappies at all, you could go straight from Size 1 to Size 3 no problem. The only reason I saw for buying Size 2 was that you got more Size 2 nappies in a pack than Size 3 nappies for the same price so it was slightly cheaper per nappy.
We bought a baby bath from Asda Direct for £5 and we use it every day. It's great for getting her to realise it's bed time and she has her bath in her bedroom. It's reasonably sized, I reckon she'll probably get another 3 months out of it until she's too big but when it only cost £5, it wouldn't bother me too much to throw it out/recycle if I was short on space. Chances are that I'll throw it into the moses basket and put it away in the attic for the next one to use, whenever that may be. It is also a godsend when she does an explosive poo that goes all up her back. There is no point attempting to clean her up with wipes, you'd use half a pack trying and she'd still be dirty. When this happens, I put the changing mat on the floor, put her on it (with her clothes on), fill up the bath, undress her , put her into the bath and sponge off the poo. When she's still in the bath, I wipe down the changing mat (that has poo all over it!) that's beside her, put her onto the changing mat, put the filthy water down the toilet, refill the bath and put her back in again to make sure she is properly clean. The whole process takes less than 10 minutes and is much easier than trying to clean her with wipes.
One thing that does take up a ridiculous amount of space and I regret having is a moses basket stand. If your baby has reflux/wind problems, you'll end up ditching the stand anyway and putting something under the basket at the top end. Our baby was like this so I'm guessing we used the stand twice and it is still sitting in our bedroom taking up space.
One thing you will all definitely need is a baby scissors and nail clippers set - we got ours from Boots, their own brand cos other brands were twice the cost. Some babies need to have their nails cut while they are still in the hospital while some might take a week or two, but they will only end up scratching their faces if they have long nails and cry because somebody/something has hurt their face! Get a few sponges while you're at it.
Something else I highly recommend buying before birth is a bottle and formula. If you want to breastfeed, get those 3pack cartons of formula. DO NOT wait til after the birth to buy these. On my first night home from hospital, I still hadn't properly figured out breastfeeding and ended up sending DH out at all hours of the night to get some formula because she wouldn't stop screaming and wouldn't feed. The following morning, the midwives turned up and breastfeeding got back on track. Another time, I decided to express and feed her through a bottle. No sooner had I finished expressing than DH walked past and knocked over the bottle, sending all of the milk over our carpet. My boobs were now empty and she needed feeding. So we used formula. Sometimes the baby might have a reaction to something you have eaten after a breastfeed and vomit up the entire lot and then want another feed 20 minutes later. In these circumstances, having some formula and a bottle on standby makes life much easier. And don't worry - despite what the literature says, missing one feed every now and again will not reduce your milk supply.
In terms of clothes, an average sized baby at birth can fit into 0-3 month clothes - they might be a bit big, but they won't look ridiculous either. My baby (7lbs 4ozs but a long baby) was wearing 0-1 month and 0-3 month clothes in her first week and the 0-3 month clothes were slightly big on her but they were fine. Next time round, I probably won't bother buying 0-1 month clothes at all. Also, if you want to save money and the planet, make sure all the clothes up to 3 months are white - not only can they be re-used for boys or girls, but they can all be put in the same wash. If you want people to know that they are a boy or girl, a pink or blue hat or cardigan/jacket will do the trick!
Somebody asked about maternity pads - I am guessing that these would be provided in all maternity hospitals - when I first came to hospital in labour, my waters leaked constantly for about 4 hours and they were giving me new pads every half hour or so. I'm sure I'm not the only one who leaked like that so I would guess hospitals would have a huge supply. But it's just a guess!Overpay Mortgage by £9,100 in 2013 - £9,316.16/£9,100

Hi, welcome to any newbies that have joined in the last few days
I've had a rotten stomach bug for three days, so I haven't been able to sit at the computer long enough to keep up properly and type a reply. I'm either asleep or on the toilet most of the time, which isn't too good!
Hope everyone is ok.
Happy due date to emsbet
Good luck for this afternoon Rups, I've got my fingers crossed for you.
Hopefully I'll be back to catch up properly soon as I'm feeling a bit better today!Cross Stitch Cafe member no.800
