Also depends how old they are, I understand that the issues with used car seats is you can't tell if they have been in an accident and may have hair line fractures which can't be seen but can cause issues. The rubber degrades over time so even if it is brand new never been used if it is 15 years old then the rubber will have degraded and safety issues changed (I only mention this because this is what my mum tried to give me)

Not sure I'd buy one from somewhere I didn't know, but if it was someone you knew and the seat was fairly recent I'd be OK with it. We've been given one as a friend of ours flew back from somewhere and the airline lost their seat in the baggage handling, so they got given one to get home from the airport - genuine 'used once' from someone we know0

I have a used car seat, however it is from one of my friends and was very rarely used as they do not have a car. It was also bought brand new for her little boy who has just turned one.
Don't think I would trust one that I got from a stranger though.
Don't want to bring the mood down but just need to have a little self pitying moment if that's ok, nothing to do with babies so please feel free to ignore.
January this year one of my cats started to suffer with what we were told was asthma so every month she has been to the vets for steroids etc which she hates. Then two months ago they suggested we took her to a specialist to have the diagnosis confirmed as steroids long term are not great and she was only 6. So we have dragged her off to the specialists and put her through all types of tests and had great fun getting medication down her.
Over the last two weeks there has been a massive improvement she has started eating properly and going out and was our friendly little Izzy again. She went out last night and we got up this morning to find her dead. I looks like she has been hit by a car but somebody has picked her up and put her in our garden as she was facing the wrong way to have crawled home. I feel utterly devastated and have spent most of the day in tears, I know some people will say she is only a cat but to me she was my baby.0 -
Oh Kittycat how awful. I have 5 of my own cats and they're totally my babies too, for now anyway! I can understand how devasted you must be. Sending hugs.0

Kittycat, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat
It's the worst shock - I got home from my work Xmas do last year and found one of my cats laying in the middle of the road, he'd been hit by a car too.
Look after yourself, it's a horrible thing to happen.0 -
So sorry to hear about your cat Kitty that is so sad.:(
I am back from midwife, all is still fine and a bit uneventful really, who else was it saying they reckon they are in for a terrible birth after an easy pregnancy? slightly worried that at 33 +5 she has already written 4/5th for the engaged bit-thought all that came much later. I am right in thinking that 0/5th is fully engaged aren't I?
Her opinion on raspberry leaf tea is that it won't do any harm, might help if you start taking it from early 30s in weeks. But it tastes minging and is expensive. Might see how minging and how expensive but give it a go
Re car seats, if I trusted the people it came from I would go for it. What I don't understand is there doesn't seem to be an issue with a 2nd hand base, but surely that is just as likely to crack in an accident??? Or are they not recommended either?0 -
CandyCane I was 4/5 engaged at 34 weeks, but yesterday at 36+6 baby's head was free again! It doesn't seem to make any difference as it's still wriggling around and can come back out. I think some babies aren't even engaged until labour begins.0

Kittycat - very sorry for your loss
Vic - I don't think you'll be able to read this, but will be thinking of you.
Cake - happy birthday! Re: car seats, like the others say, it depends on where it comes from but if I was unsure, I probably wouldn't risk it, not worth it...
LM - I can't wait to see what your nursery is like. Sounds great! Your OHs 'adventure' made me laugh... bless him
AFM - I just came back from mw. All good this end, baby was head down and kicked her after he measured her, she was well excited! I asked about the feeding cup and mw said they'd give us one if we needed so for those who are thinking about bf, maybe worth asking your mw as well. I also asked about the raspberry leaf tea and she said I'm too early for that (30+6). She wouldn't recommend it until 37 weeks.:jBaby girl born 3rd October 2012:j0
