I had a link somewhere to the top 300 - http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-266770 has the excel files on - page 6 is I think the full one with all the glorious misspellings etc... Erin's running in number 40ish - seem to have met dozens since we named her - but her name wasn't on our shortlist at all, we just happened to have a random conversation one morning where we mentioned we liked it - and she decided to kick me into labour that same evening... she was going to be an Anna or an Imogen. I just wanted something with a conventional spelling (I've got the less common variant of a name and it's CONSTANTLY spelt wrong) that didn't have connotations of nightmare kids I'd taught with that name... I have a wide range of grey hairs directly attributable to various Thomases for instance.

ditto with the less used spelling, I'm forever correcting people. It's especially funny when I have to ring the IT helpdesk at work and spell it with the NATO alphabet, as the first letter of my name has the normal spelling as it's phonetic word, and they STILL can't understand me when I tell them!

Oooh my name is in the 300-320 range and OH's is in the 1080-1100 range (only 25 called it last year)!!!

Bump's most probable name is in the 350-370 range and 110+ kids were called it last year!!!

But...it is a nickname of a longer name which is less popular in the 2880-2900 range.

We are not sure which one to use the long one or short one?

The names lists are interesting. My name is at 615, which considering how common it is I was quite surprised. Even the normal spellings are really low down. I was hoping the name I want for baby would have fallen, but it's gone up one, so top 10 now. If we didn't have such a common surname it wouldn't be as bad having the popular first name!

I'm obsessed with having the long versions of names. I think it can always be shortened later as a nickname, but you can never make it longer if you go for the short one.

I always like the idea of a long version of a name you can bellow when they've REALLY got themself into trouble!

Lol dizzi good point. My kids both have short names, so when I'm cross it's their first, middle and surname all together - they know they've been naughty when they hear that!

dizsiebubba - I've also read that it's normally a good idea to give the longer version of the name as the kid can then decide later on to use the longer less 'kiddy' one if they want - although the way you've worded your question makes me think the shorter one might not be more 'kiddy' just shorter IYSWIM...

You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

  • Yes it isn’t a kiddy shortening…just the longer version is VERY Italian for a baby born in south london to a mummy and daddy born in south London who only his granddad was Sicilian so ¼ Sicilian, ¼ Hungarian and ½ English!!! The short version is more anglicised which is probably why it is more popular… plus when we pronounce them with our south london accents… the shorter one sounds nicer and the loner one sounds tacky lol!!!

ETA - The longer one was his Sicilian grandads name...which is why we wanted the shorter one to be named after him!
